While it saddens my wife and I to write this, we feel it must be said as we feel it is extremely important that this site be based on trust between all fellow members - both those requiring house-sitters and those wishing to be sitters. Pam and Jan, originally from South Africa, sat for us recently, taking care of our home and our three dogs, for two months. We learned only AFTER they arrived that they were using our home address for obtaining official government papers. Not only, but while we were gone, the couple also used our home address for other official papers to be delivered, without our knowledge, as well as to enter government-funded training programmes. After learning this when we returned, we, of course, spoke to Pam to find out to what extent our home address had been used (some might say, ‘misused.’) We were left dismayed by how little we had been informed about. Placing this in context, the couple wanted to leave South Africa and start a new life in Ireland (they had a son already living in Ireland) and wanted to get official papers - including a driving license, unemployment benefits/pension, start a business etc - accomplished as soon as possible. But my wife and I felt strongly we should have been notified that our home was being used in this way. In fact, an official - a civil servant operating on behalf of the Irish Government - visited our home to meet with them without us having any knowledge of this, until after our return. That is in respect to our home, then there is the matter, even more important, of our three dogs. We had been told during our Zoom interview with the couple before accepting them to mind our home and dogs that they both liked to walk every day. But when we returned, we found out that at least one member of the couple did not like to walk much at all. When we got back the dogs were rather irascible and had put on a lot of weight, several kilos each. For dogs not to get proper exercise is bad enough, for collie dogs, with their immense levels of energy, not to get proper exercise, can lead to severe and detrimental psychological effects. It is possible, perhaps even probable, that Pam and Jan can take good care of small dogs or cats, which don’t require as much exercise as larger dogs, especially sheepdogs - we are speaking of an average of one hour per day, an average that our dogs need to be healthy and content. Perhaps, also, they have already dealt with the necessary official government papers and don’t need to use peoples’ homes anymore for these transactions. Our main advice to fellow house owners is that there is no alternative when considering this couple for future house/pet sittings than to ask the relevant questions and hope what you are told is the truth, something that is unfortunately very difficult to verify via a Zoom interview. And to verify the opinions of other home and pet owners for whom the couple sat. All that being said, we wish Pam and Jan every success and happiness in their new life in Ireland.
