We’re very happy that this family invited us to take care of their very special feline babies when they went on a week-long trip. There are three Sphynx cats and one fluffy type. This was our first experience with hairless cats and our first time with four of them and we learned so much.
Laura and Dewi invited us to their home in Genthod (pronounced something like ʒɑ̃-to or ZHAn-tô) and we immediately felt very welcome. Azar was the first one to greet us, followed by the fluffy Ari and later the last two, Ziggy and Zephyr. We immediately had good rapport with the cats, which is to Laura and Dewi’s credit since all four cats are incredibly sweet and trusting.

Laura and Dewi gave us great instructions on how to prepare their raw food (all prepared and frozen before our arrival), how to give Ziggy his medicine (it’s easy!), and where to find all cat care items. When they were away, they were also quick to answer our questions via WhatsApp. We also sent them lots of pictures from the cat shenanigans in the garden.

They love to play with the many different toys they have in the house. Zephyr played fetch with his grey ball while Azar and Ari went nuts for feathery stick toys. Ziggy was the least playful with us but sometimes could be encouraged to join playtime.

We sometimes removed eye boogers from the cats, gave Ari brushies, and did skin checks on the Sphynxes. They mostly cuddle each other in twos in the attic, but sometimes they’d jump on our laps for pets and would butt their heads to ours. Zephyr can purr like a moped while slow-blinking at you, Ziggy loves chin scratches, Azar wants you to sit still so he can rub his chin on you, and Ari (sometimes) loved belly rubs. None of them ever scratched us intentionally.

All four cats are allowed to go outside under supervision. When it’s sunny in the middle of the day it’s important to put sweaters on the Sphynxes and limit their time outside. It’s not difficult to get them all inside the house with an incentive in the form of the Dreamies. We also enjoyed the terrace and garden since it was very sunny.
Since we live carfree, getting to the supermarkets in Versoix was a bit of planning. We walked in one direction and took the bus back, which worked fine. There’s also a very nice swimming spot in Genthod that we never would have found without Laura’s instructions. We loved the calm and quiet of Genthod, though there are a lot of airplanes passing over, mostly around noon. We only really noticed them when we were sitting outside.
Jonas and I found it very useful to be two people for this sit. Not only does it come in handy to have another person ready to airlift Ari out of the kitchen once he ate his food, but also to put on the sweaters on the Sphynxes. But if you have experience with single-handedly dressing cats, by all means apply to this wonderful sit.
