Elizabeth is a kind woman and I appreciated her communication prior to arrival. There was an accident involving one of our belongings and she was communicative about it, offering to cover the cost of a replacement, which I greatly appreciated! Her other reviews are excellent and I believe she is likely a wonderful sitter under different circumstances. Unfortunately, we would likely not invite her back as a sitter as we were simply not a good match for the following reasons: 1. A few hours before arrival, Elizabeth reached out to ask if her boyfriend could “come by”. We have no problem with our sitters having guests so I said that was totally fine- what wasn’t communicated is that he was planning to stay for the entire sit. While they both seem like lovely people, we know absolutely nothing about this man who stayed in our apartment for a week- very uncomfortable. The last minute text, when they both had to fly from across the country so clearly she knew much further in advance, was also disappointing, and the situation felt very dishonest. 2. We arrived home to a messy apartment, despite leaving it clean and tidy. Elizabeth left a kind note apologizing for not having time to clean, but it was really unacceptable. Dirty sheets + towels were left on the bed, toiletries were left on the bathroom shelf + in the shower, and the fridge was filled with old leftovers. We filled an entire trash bag with the things they left behind, and spent our first day home cleaning the apartment. Our other sitters have always left our home clean- this was incredibly disappointing. 3. Our cats were quite upset when we returned. They’ve thrived with our other sitters and have shown no signs of separation anxiety after our trips. This time was the polar opposite- they refused to eat for a day after we returned, they spent their days hiding, showed no interest in their normal activities, etc. This is so unlike them that we took them to the vet 2 days after returning home and were told they were both extremely anxious to the point we were told to use medication for a week. While I have no idea what caused this behavior, I do know that our other sitters updated us throughout their stays- we don’t expect an essay, but a daily “they ate their food, I cleaned the litter box, and we played with the wand- they seem to be doing well, although Nami didn’t like his hairball medicine!” is very appreciated. I asked Elizabeth for updates multiple times and was sent blurry photos with no information. 4. There were 3 different spots where the cats had peed outside of their litter box- we were not told about these, nor were they cleaned up. Our apartment smelled like cat pee the moment we walked in and we had to hunt to find the spots. Based on the smell, this clearly happened days prior. This is extremely out of character for our cats, and has only happened when we moved from a different state. I’m not sure if the litterboxes weren’t kept clean or the environment was just extremely stressful, but clearly my cats were not happy.
Melissa was an amazing cat sitter and we could not have been happier. She took the time to get to know all the cats personally and gave them loads of special attention. Over her stay, she keep us updated on a regular basis with sweet pictures of her being the Pied Piper of the four cats. In order to meet us personally, she even came few days earlier to Berlin all the way from the US. Our house was clean when we came home as well. I would not hesitate to use Melissa again. Thanks for a job well done!!!
