Cheryl and John were fantastic house sitters. They were loving and conscientious with Micky, who is now an old dog with increased needs. Their communication was outstanding and I loved getting photos and little updates on how he was getting on. We got back to a very happy and relaxed dog and a spotless home. I can recommend them without reservation. Five stars all around!!!
We really wanted to give Heidi, Richard and their two sons the best Christmas in our lovely home. But this was not the place for them. It has its quirks as we were at pains to point out before the house sit began. They stayed with us the night before we left. I cooked the family a meal and we carefully ran the couple through everything – there is no central heating so it's important to know how to use the woodburners properly and how to use the overnight water boost system when the solar isn't sufficient. Unfortunately they took no notice (I also gave them written notes). The house was full of woodburner dust when we arrived home where they kept emptying it (with loads of ash dumped all over the spring bulbs) and we have a huge additional electricity bill from constant daytime use of the immersion. Several things were broken - including a kitchen cupboard as water was allowed to soak into it from the draining board and parts of our outdoor pizza oven. When we got home from our holiday at 10am on a Monday morning (we had told them we would be home by this time) after an overnight sleepless flight, we had to wait til 12.30 pm to get beyond the kitchen. This was particularly annoying as we were both starting work that afternoon with meetings from 1pm. They hadn't properly cleaned the house, including the loos or emptied the bathroom bins or changed the bed linen. The kitchen was a mess. I had paid for our cleaner to come in a few days before we got home and she said she had never seen such a mess - I feel so bad that she had to try and clean it. They didn't offer her any additional money. I had said they could have additional family to stay for Christmas night - bringing the total number of people in the house to 8 or 9 I think. The family stayed for a lot longer and beyond New year - several additional people for such a prolonged period in a four bedroomed house really took its toll on the place (and our bills). I had asked Heidi to worm the dog which was due while we away but she didn't. I asked them to keep him on a lead but they didn't and he ran off for hours, which was worrying when you're so far away. When I pointed out on our return that the sheep had no water she just said she assumed they had an automatic water system. I appreciate they had to look after our ageing demented cat who makes terrible yowling noises - both cats were well looked after. And I appreciate the weather was awful which doesn't make New Forest life so appealing. I tried to talk these things through with Heidi as I know they rely on this service and thought she could take on some of the comments. But she said that she had a long list of grievances about their stay here, which she will put in her review. She said it was chaotic when we left. Well, it was certainly chaotic when we got home! Clearly not the place for them and I feel sad they really didn't enjoy it as it's a pretty special place. I really did want them to and I did try my best to make them feel as at home as possible. It gives me no pleasure to leave this review but I understand this service doesn't work otherwise.
