Kathy's welcome guide is excellent and will tell you everything you need to know. If you're seeking ways to enjoy Grants Pass and more, Kathy is a wealth of knowledge, experience and joy; well travelled -- shows in her home with mementos and spices from around the world and clever design choices like a shelf above bedroom doors for storing bath towels and fans to draw humidity out. I was delighted with how comfortable it was to work remote here with a separate building housing the office so another excuse to enjoy her yard and deck too. My sit was too early to use her outdoor kitchen but I enjoyed most meals seated at her outdoor dining with Oso warming my feet. Kathy had minimal asks and it would be easy for a sitter to spend their time however they chose. Oso may be the lowest maintenance dog ever too; more about him later.

Kathy invited me to stay longer for the oldest growers' market in Oregon and porchfest, and I am so glad: magic day! The following week quickly passed, mostly busy working remote, and the weekend arrived quicker than I anticipated. Saturday we walked for blocks. Kathy told me the history of Grants Pass from the houses that arrived by train ordered from Sears' catalogs and over forty (40) years how the town changed and also the ways it had not changed. I am now spoiled by the artisan bakery "uprise" (pun intended) for their phenomenal teff multigrain, and Medford's strawberries that remind me of the wilds in the subalpine I adore hiking. Porchfest was a variety of music that I wish every town would do! It's the type of event that is timeless and made COVID disappear. It's rare to find something, and safe with the two metres distance and such, that brings people together.

An unexpected delight about Grants Pass are the trees. Kathy knows every kind and adores nature as much as I do. We hiked part of Rogue River and now I am eager to return and hike the overnight Kathy brags about. One of my favourite features of her home is Grants Pass' soon to be fourth and grandest heritage tree, a Redwood Tree, that keeps her home at an ideal temperature (imagine a tower of air conditioning), and served as a "lighthouse" to find the way "home" walking Oso. I never turned on the heat nor air conditioning during my sit.

At that time of my sitting the sprinkler wasn't working – sprinklers work now so the next sitter does not need to water the grounds but does need to water the hanging baskets, if it’s summer – so I cared for her gardens. There is a fabulous snake that makes a home under a food path between the blueberry bushes and hot tub, and a skink lizard of some sort on the back deck, with those you'll never have any troubles with bugs and snails. That said, Kathy laughed when I showed her my “bucket of death" of chemicals and traps I found around her home and gathered into one place to keep Oso and her grandchildren safe from and also make it easy for Kathy to battle said uninvited guests that every homeowner deals with.

Other uninvited guests, namely squirrels and blue jays, Oso does an excellent job. I was pleasantly surprised that Oso ignores squirrels and blue jays on walks! It's difficult to tell a pet's physicality and personality from a website or Zoom; Oso is a tank: weighing only a few pounds less than me and all muscle. Strangers either want to cuddle him or are terrified, and sometimes their dogs want to pick fights -- Oso never initiated. Oso requires a confident and athletic dog owner. We walked, hiked about ten (10) miles daily. Oso generally tires at around six (6) miles. Please bring water for Oso, check that the ground isn't too hot for Oso’s paws as Grants Pass gets hot or at least by my Canadian standards hot, and mind that as a large breed dog Oso’s hips need TLC so no big jumps or heights. On a gentle leader I got from PetCo, where I also extended Oso’s collar as his neck was too muscular for his smaller collar, Oso is extremely responsive and does not pull at all. I dedicated the time to teach Oso heel and once accustomed I could walk him without a lead. Oso is the kind of dog that enjoys a job. If you bring Oso to PetCo I'm sure they will remember him as Oso was chatty, sounding more like a parrot than a dog. While I always brought poop bags, Oso never used them -- not once! For such a large dog, there is scant scat to pick up in Kathy's yard as she feeds him high quality food; my vet and boarder recommend the same feed. Oso was happiest with me, so we walked for groceries and to explore. Kathy drew a map and recommended hikes before she left. At home Oso would bring me my shoe, and if I delayed, the other matching shoe, then a sock, then the other matching sock; it was Oso's way to let me know I needed a break from work to walk; smart dog! Oso is an excellent bedtime reminder at around 9 pm he would disappear to bed and if I was tardy he would fetch me by 10 pm. Unfortunately Oso knocked a bedside lamp over and broke that bulb but fortunately he stayed in bed until I cleaned the broken glass as I feared Oso might get that broken glass into his paw. If you don’t want Oso sharing your bed – he is a polite bed buddy – keep the bedroom door closed. Giving Oso his nightly allergy medication is easy too: a spoon of peanut butter and a pill and Oso eagerly laps up. Oso adores being rubbed and has a fantastic palm brush to do so with; recommend outside as his tiny short haired fur sheds. There is both a vacuum and a Roomba and the floors are hard so cleaning is easy.

Our sit began with a comical start. When I accepted Kathy's house sit I was driving the coast starting from Canada. She's a few hours inland from Oregon's coast. There are many "dead zones" along that drive without cell reception, GPS and internet. We managed to connect and start a day early by her request which gave me a better feel for who Oso is used to, so I could do my best to continue Kathy's habits and demeanor. Oso was sprayed by a skunk with the previous sitter who also let Oso into Kathy’s home so everything was skunked. PetCo sold skunk removal, and while Oso did his best to avoid my bath, I succeeded in deskunking the dog, furniture, rugs, linens and so on, on a dry day so Kathy returned to a Home SWEET smelling home.

In addition to exploring Grants Pass, Kathy just moved in so wasn't fully unpacked, so I helped her by setting up outdoor dining (and as I wrote, I enjoyed very much!), creating a cabinet at her grandchildren’s height and another for dear Oso, a second bathroom, and so on. Kathy is too humble in her listing about her kitchen, so I take the liberty to elaborate now because this feature of Kathy’s home shows her heart: She has double viking ranges and ovens with settings that include bake, conv bake, tru conv, conv roast, conv broil, hi broil, med broil, low broil, self clean, convection dehydration, convection defrost – wow! Every pot, pan and knife to be dreamed of; all in excellent condition. In tidying I created a library of spices, another library of preserves, and so on. By the end of my sit I had a new wishlist for my own kitchen – my home’s photos are in my profile so you can see I’m no slouch to home ownership – including Kathy’s small appliance lifts with hidden cabinets. I was surprised that Kathy’s kitchen is not for herself; Kathy loves to care for others and cooking is one way Kathy shows this love; she cooked the most delicious Peruvian dish. I am teary eyed thinking that this is the type of soul that animates our emergency rooms (Kathy's career and also retirement: she volunteers to bring medical care to the most rural and remote regions and peoples in Peru) and frontlines during this plague and could not be more grateful that such people exist and spend their lives helping us. Honestly I can't imagine visiting Grants Pass, or being within a day’s drive, and not spending time with Kathy. She is an amazing and inspirational person and the sort I would like to see in political office.

Kathy invited me to visit her in Thailand too and I so hope COVID and planes permit.

I realize this is an unusually long review; I want to help sitters, Kathy and Oso; she has many months sitting over winter advertised and that’s a lot for everyone to consider so I hope this review assists.

I suspect she would enjoy a wine club as a gift.

I recently had the pleasure of spending a week house-sitting in Helensburgh, Scotland, and it was nothing short of fantastic. I can't recommend it highly enough. If you have the opportunity, don't hesitate to take it. Here is why:

The star of my stay was Ivy, a young and wonderfully well-behaved German Shepherd. Her lively energy and adventurous spirit made each day a joy, whether we were frolicking on the nearby beach, playing in the waves, or taking invigorating hikes through the local paths.

The location of the house itself could not have been better. Nestled within a charming farm, it offered a calming atmosphere and picturesque views right out of the window. One could start the day with the peaceful sight of grazing sheep and horses, a true homage to the serene countryside.

Proximity to Glasgow was another advantage, offering an opportunity to explore the bustling city when we weren't busy enjoying the natural surroundings. The house is conveniently located near several hiking trails, making it an excellent base for outdoor exploration.

The house came with its own beautiful garden - a perfectly maintained haven of greenery that was a delight to spend time in. The added feature of a fireplace truly set it apart, creating a perfect spot for cozy evening fires.

I felt right at home from the beginning, which set a comfortable and relaxing tone for the week. The communication process was excellent - easy and straight forward.

Last but not least, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for this extraordinary stay. The opportunity to enjoy such a beautiful part of Scotland and to care for the delightful Ivy was truly appreciated. Thank you for opening your home to me and making this unforgettable experience possible.

The four cats were very friendly and entertaining (albeit slightly chaotic at times). Genevieve’s apartment is very cute and comfortable. Overall, it was an enjoyable time in Portland.

We had a lovely time with Peaty and Salvador in Liechtenstein. Peaty took us around on beautiful hikes and it was a joy watching him enjoying life, exploring, running and being such a good boy on-leash and off-leash! And after the days of adventures he was the cutest napper :)

Salvador is very friendly and graceful kitty, with the cutest frown and his little talks :). He was always hanging around us, or on the terrace enjoying the views and talking to the birds.

Sarah and Stephen are very kind and easygoing couple. They prepared a very good welcome guide with everything to know and showed us around on the day of their departure. Their apartment is spacious, modern and has everything you would need for your stay. The views from every room are awesome and there is plenty of greenery around to feel calm and balanced.

What amazing little girls are Freya and Athena! We had so much fun with these both beautiful and friendly fur ladies. They were so kind to us, giving us attention and letting us cuddle them already in the first moments together. Cuties! We fall in love with them and their personalities. Athena was so sweet and curious to get to know us better and what treats could we offer, with plenty of snuggles and naps beside us on the couch 😁. Freya also was very sweet and attentive, making sure we understood she would lend us her bed, but during the day it was her master queen's place to take a nap.😁 So cute, as she always wanted to lie down in our belly and make herself comfortable. They are so chill and affectionate. ❤️

Nicholas and Belinda are wonderful people, super nice and polite with us. Nicholas even collected us from home, very kind of him. They explained to us everything we needed to know on our Zoom call and also at home. Amazing pet parents who love their animals so much. We were delighted to meet them.

The house is beautiful and comfortable with a lovely garden in a stunning and quiet neighborhood. We felt at home straight away and could do our work normally, while having the privilege to play with awesome Freya and Athena. There is a supermarket quite close by to buy groceries and whatever is needed. We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who loves adorable and fluffy cats, and ourselves would look after the girls again without a doubt! 😁😁Thanks guys!

Everyone we've housesat for on this platform is amazing, and sometimes we meet some super extraordinarily awesome people and James and Jackie are them. They are genuinely good hearted, fun, and we are so happy we've met them here and had the pleasure of taking care of their fantastic pups. Gracie, Leila, Max, and Val are all a joy to hang out and walk with, if you enjoy love filled puppy eyes and hallmark cute dog moments, you'll love these pups. Jackie is ever transforming their edible garden, growing and harvesting tomatoes, squashes, berries, herbs, chestnuts depending on the season, if you love taking care of plants this is an extra bonus! The area their house is located in is rich with beautiful vistas (the house itself has an amazing view), many walks and fields to let the pups run wild in. There are countless beautiful places to explore in and around the area as well, during our stay we even got to catch the Tour de France.
