Once in a lifetime will a dog like Pi come into your life. When I applied for this sit opportunity, Nicky reassured me that Pi did not have the usual Collie temperament, requiring constant stimulation, but this didn’t prepare me for the calm, intelligent, sensitive adorable Pi I was lucky enough to spend 5 days with.
I arrived an hour or so before Nicky left, and felt an immediate rapport as I was met by Nicki in such a friendly, welcoming manner. I immediately felt how organised she is. The henhouse was immaculate, and her instructions very clear. Nicki then walked me through her lovely home and described the morning routine and how to walk Pi, giving me the important instruction not to throw balls or sticks to her, and to keep her on a lead until clear of the houses in case Pi got over excited to see a cat ! Then we walked to the lovely allotment at the back of the house where Nicki showed me the path that leads to the river.
I tried to follow everything as exactly as I could as Pi has been so well raised and nurtured I didn’t want to spoil her temperament in any way. She seems to thrive on routine, even down to sitting in front of the TV in the evening, patiently waiting for me to navigate the remote for about 20 mins, until I got the David Attenborough series we both enjoyed. I laughed every evening to see her enjoyment of this moment and her patience astounded me.

Nicky’s home is a lovely base from which to explore Hebden Bridge. It is peaceful, has a great atmosphere, and there are beautiful stones and artistic objects to meet the eye and reflect on, a fire pit in the front garden and wonderful views. A calm retreat.

However, other than Pi, what sets this house sit apart is the wonderful community that Hebden Bridge is famous for. When I needed help due to something unforeseen happening, the neighbours rallied to and complete strangers kindly came to my aid.
I will remember this forever.
