Megan is really nice, considerate, and generous host. The communication was smooth before we arrived and she prepared instructions for taking care of the cats and lent us bikes to explore the city. She also prepared some snacks and a bottle of wine to welcome us, which we really appreciated. Her house is clean and cozy with everything you need, at a central location. Merlin and Maisy are so delightful with opposite characteristics. We will definitely miss those cuddly moments and watching them ‘fighting’ drama! We will absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to explore Amsterdam with budget and have a fun time with two cuties! We had such a lovely time there, thanks Megan, we would certainly like to come back some day in the future!
Amazing stay in Bushey with Boots and Houdini !
Helena & Camille were lovely from the first contact, and they made me feel welcome at their place. They clearly put a lot of love and effort into raising Scrunch and Maceo, and were clear about what their routines are but also exceptionally easy going and trusting while away. I've taken care of a lot of dogs, and Scrunch is, without a doubt, one of the easiest-to-take-care-of dogs I've ever spent time with. He's energetic when outside, can go off-leash easily, has great recall when it counts, loves to play fetch, is interested and good with other dogs, and when at home he's cuddly and mostly calm. Watching Scrunch and Maceo play made every day more enjoyable – cuteness overload! Maceo has his own cute little kitten personality, he's not shy at all, and will come and cuddle quite happily when I was hanging out on the couch. Better hide your food though, because Maceo is coming for it if you take your eyes off it for even just a split second. ;P I loved staying at their place with their two boys, and will happily go back for some more Scrunch & Maceo time soon.
Such a lovely sit in a beautiful home that has the most incredible views! We were immediately made to feel at home. Treacle and Murphy are the loveliest, well-mannered dogs that were super easy to look after. The location of the house is perfect as is walking distance from Robin Hoods Bay, as well as being a short drive from Whitby and other local attractions. We would have no doubts recommending this sit and would love to do it again in the future!
In life, I like to follow the old rule “Do not do to others what you do not want them do to do to you”. In house sitting, I am always pleased when we agree with the owners on an unwritten rule “I do all my best to take care of your pets and property, while you do your best to make the place safe and comfortable”. Both of them require some self/discipline, and in case of the latter also the acknowledgement of the fact house sitting is a mutual collaboration. Not a free accommodation, as many sitters would love to believe, or free labour and pet carer as many owners would hope for. When applying for this sit, it was the very first time in nearly nine years that I accepted an invitation for a sit without any review from the previous house sitters, despite knowing that there were already some. We thought we would make an exception since we loved the place described on the listing. The introductory call with the owners went smooth, and we had no reason to doubt our decision. Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by Alex and Scott, who prepared some shared meals for us, and spent four nights in a tiny house which serves as an accommodation for the workaway people who help out on the farm occasionally. The tiny house is a new, cozy place, and warm when using the stove. We arrived earlier as the plan was to show us around, and get used to the routine around animals. Unfortunately, due to the rain, we spent most of the time in the tiny house. Little we knew, that rainy days were going to be a new norm for the upcoming three months, when we got maybe 10-15 days of sun during the whole sit. Shame, cause the house of Scott and Alex is situated in a lovely village with stone houses scattered in the valley, and you can get some stunning views of the mountainous landscape on a bright day. The main space for house sitting though was a beautifully renovated old house with high ceiling, stone walls, and tastefully decorated interior. THE PLACE I am not mentioning weather conditions here by filling up space in he review box. Unfortunately, bad weather cause low temperature, and since the main source of the heating system in the house was fire stove in the main room, we started running out of timber already in the middle of the sit. The wood was wet as the lumber tarpaulin didn’t do the job, and most of the timber got soaking wet. When the temperature dropped to zero or below at night in January (indoor temperature was 10 C), there was no way for us to warm up the house, and bedroom in particular, which was far from the main source of heat. The walls in bedroom got wet practically form the beginning of the sit, and as the rain did not stop, there wasn’t a chance for the walls to dry up. Things would have been easier if we have got a remote control of the a/c in the bedroom, or a heads-up from the owners that there was a heater in the cellar, which we found only by coincidence when desperately looking for a solution to warm up the place as a result of constant cold and high humidity, I got bronchitis. Our electronics started failing. We got the message, cutting on electricity bills is a challenge, but at which cost… Two weeks prior the end of the sit the mold started popping out of the walls, which was a final call for us to move back to tiny house at least during the nights. We communicated all of this with the owners, who seemed to sympathise with us, and asked us politely if there is anything they could do for us, which I honestly did not know how they could from distance. We didn’t feel to impose with a request for extra fire wood for us. I guess politeness is not always the way to succeed in a surviving mode. We reminded the owners two times, that they would need to order some timber for them as we knew we were going to use up all what was available. Surprisingly, Alex did not recall that after they came back, and asked us why we had not told them there was only a few logs left. THE PETS I could sum up our experience with pet sitting in a few words: we failed. And we didn’t. Two rabbits, Chewy and Frosty, are indoor pets. Even if I prefer pets who run towards me, not away from me when coming back home, they were sweet to interact with, and our son loved them! Most of the daytime they spent in the bedroom, under the bed. Occasionally they would show up in the living room, where our son could interact with them. They were pretty quiet during the day. The fun began at night. They loved playing with their carton board toys under the bed, scratching the walls, and sprinting from the bed into the living room and back under the bed, the same one we were sleeping in, or at least tried to. If you have light sleep, get your earplugs or headphones ready. The rabbits required a high maintenance, which includes mainly cleaning. The whole house is their playground, … and their toilet. Practically, before we started a day, we collected poo from the whole floor area in the house. Some we could remove, some not. And I have to admit, at the end of the sit, due to my sickness, I had no energy to clean all their fieces from the flooring. Other than that, we needed to get rid of fleas, which was less fun, since they move around the whole house, so some spring cleaning was in order, especially under the bed. Vasya the cat is an adorable lady, who came over for cuddles and food. Since she does not live in the house, we got to see her only on sunny days, which was precious and rare. Now, more about our failure. There were four hens when we arrived, At the end of our sit, there were only two left. One did not make it due to the parasites who she fought with earlier the same year, and probably did not get rid of all of them. We gave her medication that Alex suggested us, but the poor thing could not defeat them. The other hen was taken by the fox, which was practically impossible to avoid as the property is not fenced, and the hens roam in open space where you have no control over them. Or the fox. We feel really sorry about the hens as they had some great personalities, and they all did make a great hen gang together. Overall, we appreciated Scott’s hospitality a lot, but we felt a bit uncomfortable with Alex’s comments regarding the tasks when instructing us at the beginning. I am sorry, but to make inappropriate jokes or explain me how to wash dishes in my 40s was a bit off. It seemed she mistook house sitters with workaway people who might need more detailed instructions. We left Drusici a bit puzzled and exhausted. I truly did not like the way Alex reacted to our recap of how cold the place was. A remark “you guys think you not gonna deal with such a problem in your own house?” made me feel she did not comprehend the seriousness of our situation when we suffered from cold and humidity at all. There was no empathy, just an ungrateful comment. I guess we all have our own rules in communication. Drusici house sit was not our first long-term sit or stay in cold environment. Mitch and I are used to cold weather. We grew up in countries where winters bring -15 C easily. We are also used to countryside life and house sits even in colder temperature than we experienced in Drusici. The only difference was, that the previous owners were keen to provide an alternative promptly, without mockery about us not being able to cope with living in the countryside. It’s sad the sit turned out this way. We wish we could spend more time outdoors, and enjoy the company of the pets instead of trying to warm up the place unsuccessfully. Understandably, you cannot forecast the weather long ahead, and I imagine the owners could not know how cold or moldy the house could get. Hopefully, next winter will be easier to live in the house, whether for another house sitter, or the owners themselves.
Jobe is a sweet, mild-mannered and lovable Border Collie. He was my shadow the entire weekend I cared for him in this lovely and well-equipped home on Alexandria, VA. He loved a good walk on the lead and enjoyed chasing after frisbees and tennis balls in his fenced-in back yard. He was easy to care for as he grazed on his dry food throughout the day and he’d let me know when he wanted to go outside. Jobe’s parents, Ina and Doug, were easy going and great communicators. Their home was immaculate, safe and very comfortable. The guest bedroom is large and quiet with a comfy bed. The home is super convenient for exploring by foot. It is a short 10-minute walk to the metro (which takes you into Washington DC) and a 10-15 minute walk to Old Town Alexandria (with tons of dog-friendly shops and restaurants). They have an enclosed back porch which is wonderful for relaxing with a cup of tea and hanging out with Jobe. It was a pleasure sitting for Jobe and I would highly recommend this to anyone considering a house sit in the greater DC area!
