Andros was an adventure. We discovered that the property is pretty remote, ( other end of the island to the port and on top of a mountain) and as neither of us felt happy driving on the mountainous roads we were quite compromised when it came to getting around. Sherri had kindly arranged a car rental for us for half price, £15 a day, however we decided to hitch instead which was OK and something I hadn't done for many years! I'm a wuss when it comes to driving on roads at altitude I discovered, as I've been in a serious coach crash before on mountain roads and I hadn't realised we would be on such steep roads. But, we live and learn. Because we hitched we met the locals and really enjoyed the stories and getting to know Andros in a way we couldn't have imagined. Jo Jo is a lovely dog, however is a typical setter and is fairly 'crazy ' without much of an off button. The only reason this concerned us is because the area for walking is a sandy, low scrub area which is the perfect habitat for snakes, specifically vipers, and more specially the Horned Viper. Jo Jo loves to romp around on the landscape, which is lovely to watch but we did see a snake cross our path, and it did make me feel a little bit worried for him. We also had an intruder one night. The key to the appartment had been left for us jammed on the outside of the door. It would not budge, so there was nothing we could do. About half way through the sit an intruder opened the door to come in in the early hours of the morning. Thank goodness Adam was lying quietly in the main room with Jo Jo who barked, alerted Adam who saw the door slam and heard the footsteps of someone disappearing. He didn't tell me about it until we got home to UK as he knew I would be v scared to stay without good security. Obviously leaving valuables/passports etc became a big issue for Adam after this, and he slept in the front room to protect us in case it happened again. I have messaged Sherri and Stamatis about it, so I'm sure this issue will be solved. Having said that if you love get-aways and want to experience an authentic Greek Island which isn't overrun with tourists you will like it. We loved the beaches of Baksi, grandmother rock beach, St Peters and the nearest beach at Korthi. Andros, the main hub is delightful and there are good swimming spots in crystal clear waters. The food in the tavernas is delicious and authentic, and Sherri gave us lots of information about where to eat and shop ( the food is expensive to buy). Stamatis has done an incredible job of creating an allotment with so many vegetables which we picked and ate fresh. The goats and chickens were easy to look after. Jo Jo doesn't travel well, but is so easy going and can stay happily in his pen while you head for the day after his morning walk. The owners did tell it is dangerous to drive with him in the car as he tries to get in the front. There is a lovely English couple who are the Go To people if there are any problems. The property is beautifully designed and there is some lovely outdoor space to relax and enjoy the view down the valley. Stamatis and Sherri were good hosts, warm and kind and made sure we were settled in and orientated into the area. They took us for a couple of lovely meals and picked us up from the ferry.
