I've had my dogs stay in all the kennels in town/Anacortes but this kennel is by far my favorite. The staff are so friendly and you can tell your dogs are cared for because they don't smell filthy after you get them back. I honestly received my dogs the same way I dropped them off. Sunset will be my go to kennel from now on.
I was charged an exorbitant amount for the subpar care my dog received. It's clear that this kennel is only in it for the money and doesn't care about the well-being of the animals. My dogs nails where trimmed there and had three nails cut well past the quick. The old blonde lady was incredibly rude, a horrible look for the business.
My dog has stayed here twice. Each time he has returned seemingly just as I left him. I don't know what else you'd want, but I like that this place is less expensive than other kennels in the area.
I brought a friend's dog, a large husky, in for grooming last December. The dog hadn't been groomed in over a year because her owner has been homeless, living in his r.v., and they had to give her double the treatment because she was so in need of a good grooming! They did a beautiful job on her! They went out of their way to be sure she was really beautiful, washed her twice, dried her twice and groomed her twice, but only charged me their normal fee. Great people! I hope they will take her again!
This applies to cats only. We boarded our 2 cats for 1 week here while we went on vacation. They claimed their cat area was "nice." Let's go over the set up: it was 6 large wire dog kennels stacked 2 high. Each kennel had a little cat cubby for the cats to hide in, a litter box which took up half of the floor space in the kennel, and a small blanket. They did not follow feeding instructions and they provided NO WATER in the kennel and come to think of it, I didn't even see water in the building My cats were so dehydrated that they spent a full 25 minutes doing nothing but drinking water and they are still not done yet. Based on that alone, I would say if you are thinking of boarding your cats here, don't. I wish I would have taken photos. They also have no outdoor area for cats. I won't gripe about that too much because I know most people don't care, but my cats like outside and it would have been nice for them to have access to catio or some sort of outdoor space. We paid almost $400 essentially for our cats to be neglected. They would have been more comfortable, better treated, and it would have cost less to just have someone come over to the house and check on them while we were gone. I am absolutely appalled at the facilities and treatment the received. For the money we paid, they should have gotten much better. Apparently the owner likes to respond with "I don't see you in our system" so I have included our receipt as proof.
Very nice people. Hard to find anyone who will groom a fifteen-year-old blind & deaf dog, even though "he's so perfectly behaved & easy to groom.." Great groomer & groom, very well done . . . First, they LISTENED to what wife wanted done, & second, actually did it! & It's so nice to pick up a happy, contented dog!
I waited to post this review. I am not quick to post bad reviews, but I am so upset over how the situation was handled here with my dog. I boarded my Belgian malinois here once before and had a great experience. Was told my dog was welcome to come back because he showed no signs of being aggressive or a danger to anyone. I was happy to hear this because his breed isn't welcome everywhere. I brought him back a few weeks later only to leave crying and having the complete opposite experience as I did the first time around. The first time it was all female staff and my malinois was a little trouble, but did good. They managed him well. He was scared, but he survived and was safe. The 2nd time around the Male owner was there and he was extremely aggressive and mean with my dog. Needless to say my dog did not want to listen to him. I was told they know how to handle these types of breeds and if they knew how to handle them then they would not use force or aggression to handle my "aggressive breed". He responds well to positive reaffirmation. Not force from a stranger. My sweet malinois (although he's an 8 month old puppy) was a little nippy and barky would not hurt a fly and is the most gentle with kids and babies was accused of almost ripping the man's arm off! I was denied my dog staying there immediately and of course plans were ruined in that moment because I couldn't board my dog. I truly felt with that man's aggressive nature my dog was truly not safe there. I have heard horror stories about him specifically and do not trust my dog is safe there or any dog! Maybe a little dog is because they can handle them, but not a big dog they can't handle. I left the place crying and couldn't stop hugging my dog because I was so sad for him. Who knows what happened to him back there!! All I heard was a struggle and a lot of yelling and possibly him hitting my dog. I was not allowed back there so who knows what goes on behind closed doors. In the end the woman forced the man to leave and begged me to walk my dog back there and get him in the kennel myself to not stress him out. After I left extremely upset I received NO phone calls apologizing how things were handled. If I was a business owner boarding dogs and had a customer with an obvious bad experience, I would at least try and make things better, but they didn't even try. I waited to post this because with hesitation I tried another boarding place today where all dogs roam free and sleep together ( and I can watch him online) my dog is so happy playing with other dogs and interacting with the employees so so well! If my dog was aggressive he would never have passed the temperament test and could not stay. He passed with flying colors because the people who work there know how to handle the dogs and how to speak with them and treat them! It's all about the environment! This Sunset place does not have a good environment for any dog if that man works here! That is my biggest complaint!
We have a 6 month old puppy and have been taking him here to Sunset Kennels for over a month. The staff is great with him. I have no complaints about Sunset Kennels. I read other eviews about a dog owner bringing their dog here and not wanting to leave. I have had the same experience with our puppy. He LOOOOOVES it here!!! Matter of fact when we drive up he is ready to get out of the truck and heads staight to the front door. The staff is the best, friendly, very nice to our puppy, and we have not had one problem with billing or otherwise, as some people have said they did. I don't see it. If you want a great place and staff for your pet, this IS the place to bring them. Thanks again to all of the staff at Sunset Kennels. I hope you are around for a long time!!!!!!
We've boarded dogs, bought dogs, and had dogs groomed at sunset kennels. Let me say this, as far as purchasing a dog goes, they are fine, a little expensive, but fine. Problem is, I'm concerned how they treat the animals. The groomer is crass, rude, short, and hot headed. You drop your dogs at 9am and get them back as late as 5:30. On top of your dogs being there all day, it is all for no reason, as she doesn't get to them until far later in the day. In all the times our dogs have been groomed here (4 in total) not once has she called before 4:30. She always says she will call, and does, but never on time. Instead of properly managing the business it is all ad-hoc and obviously chaotic. Now here is the reason I am writing this review to warn you of their service. Since we picked up our dogs from Sunset Kennels one of our pups is obviously off kilter. He is growling when people walk into the room in an intimidating manner. He went from being a pack leader, to crawling in our laps and burying his head every time he comes in the room. I fear for how they treat animals, and could easily see the hot-headed stylist yelling at our poor pups. Take your business to somewhere that values it, save your money.
BEWARE!! HORRIBLE GROOMING AND BOARDING FACILITY - DISHONEST, ALL THE WAY: Complete HACK JOB!!! I took my Shitzu there for the first time to have her groomed. Prior to going there, I had sprayed her with some flea spray that had a distinct smell. When I got her back, not only was she completely choppy and uneven with huge chunks of hair sticking out all over the place, and her nails were still long, but she smelled exactly the same as she did before I dropped her off, like the flea spray I had used before I took her there. This just proved to me that they do not bathe the dogs, but instead they probably either just brush out all the dirt and/or use some type of dry shampoo. I couldn't believe how horrible they made my little girl look. I immediately complained when I saw her and the groomer abruptly grabbed my dog and cut some of the uneven chunks of hair, but it made no difference because she still looked horrible. KENNEL: Beware, these people are crooks. The same day I took her there for grooming, I made a reservation to board my dogs 2 months in advance. They require a $25.00 deposit to just make a reservation, but they will not tell you that its non-refundable until you try and cancel. I called the following week, still over a month in advance, to try and cancel the boarding, and they refused to refund my deposit. At no point in time did they tell me that the deposit was non-refundable. Instead they said that they would apply it towards future boarding. I told them I was moving far away and would not be using them in the future and they still refused to give me back my money. Their business practices are unethical and super shady. I asked to speak to the owner/manager and she tried to pawn me off to "the accountant," acting like she had no control over this issue. These people are dishonest and could care less about providing a good service all the way around. I mean, all their feedback about their groomer is negative and they still keep her. What does that tell you? They don't give a rip!!! I'm not disgruntled customer or saying all of out of spite. If you don't believe me, go there and see for yourself. If you read the other reviews here, you'll see its consistently bad reviews and they just don't care.
