I enjoyed taking care of Kris's menagerie. It's a beautiful area, maybe a bit more rustic than some would like.
We looked after this lovely home and farm/zoo for two weeks, minus a day as Lindsey and Howard returned a day earlier than planned. They are kind, generous people and we completely fell in love with the two dogs, three cats, the gorgeous (huge!) horse Copper and Ringo the adorable donkey. It's easy to spend hours with these wonderful animals, cuddling tiny Hero and throwing repeat tennis balls for Titus. There were a lot more creatures than we expected to feed, water, clean, muck out, entertain and generally look after - 15 different types in fact (dogs, cats, horse, donkey, quails, ducks, pheasants, peacocks, bantams, chickens, baby chicks, guineafowls, pigs, fish ponds x2)- as well as multiple greenhouses and vegetable beds to water, all spread out over the whole large plot. Cameron came for a couple of hours on Saturdays but to do other jobs (he did kindly clean out the duck pen on our request, as it was just too pungent for words!) So it's all on the housesitters every day, from early morning letting the dogs out (I found it very hard to put them into cages in a cold outhouse at night) to dusk, at 9pm or later in May, when the birds finally go into their houses and can be shut away for the night. The 16 baby chicks required regular cleaning out (new boxes organised), feeding and their water changing at least 3 times a day which took up quite a lot of time. Overall we did enjoy it but also found it quite tiring having to cope with so many things and there was not a great deal of time to do much else, especially in the early days as we got used to the routine. When we were there, a hungry fox was around, so none of the chickens could be let out of their runs. I inadvertently let one cockerel slip out and couldn't get it back in; devastatingly, it was taken by the fox that very evening. Howard was extremely nice about the incident but we still feel terrible about it. Not only that, one of the female pheasants, which had been escaping before we arrived (they didn't know how), kept escaping during our stay. She came back 3 times and we managed to get her back in, but the fourth time she just didn't come back. This required multiple trips to and from the pheasant run until late at night, to keep checking for her. Then, on a Sunday, Titus got stung by a bee (there are beehives on the plot too) and nearly had to be rushed to the emergency vet, but I couldn't get transport and luckily he was OK. Howard helped greatly by answering messages promptly and being very reassuring, but still, some of these things were rather stressful. In summary, this is a farm-sit in a beautiful location with lots of variety, some unexpected surprises, best done by more than one person with plenty of energy and a permanently available car. It definitely helps to be tall, and it's essential to be physically fit and strong enough to carry heavy buckets & sacks, push full wheelbarrows, open and close heavy gates, drag the bins up and down the very long driveway, sweep up the yard, tie up hay nets, etc. Mud- and manure-proof boots and stable mucking out clothes are essential too (thank goodness for online shopping!). But for those who are up for a challenge, the supply of fresh eggs and Titus and Hero's loving canine companionship make it worthwhile.
House is in a great, quiet location and Bob is a fun dog to hang out with. Unfortunately, the homeowner came home a night early with no advanced warning. Since we were fairly close to home, we decided to drive the three hours home vs try and find a hotel or stay with the homeowner as it is a small house and the guest room is central to the living areas. Definitely make sure to confirm dates with the homeowner.
Jane and Andrew and their 2 lovely labs were a pleasure to meet and sit for. The house and garden are beautiful but also homely and comfortable. Poly and Breachan were on their best behaviour throughout and we bonded with them easily. Communication, handover and information were excellent and we would have no hesitation in recommending this sit.
The sweetest little cuddle bug ever!! Absolutely loved taking care of Kali, she is a super easy going dog who just loves to give kisses and follow you around everywhere you go.
Krista and Greg were very welcoming and we enjoyed their beautiful home and neighborhood. It was so enjoyable to view Krista's art throughout the house and exterior. We got a kick out of Remie staring at a painting of dogs on a few occasions. All of the animals were fun to be around. Remie and Preston enjoyed walking, and all the kitties were sweet. The dog/cat door to the backyard makes this sit all the easier. You are definitely not stressed to watch all of them as they generally do their own thing until it's time for some fun and attention. The town is beautiful, and having bike paths and light rail nearby makes it ideal. Their hot tub is the icing on the cake. We would love to return if it ever works out!
