I wouldn’t recommend house sitting for Nienke. She doesn’t know how to communicate with either humans or animals. When I had a chat with her regarding the sit, she reassured me that Bear and Stella are very easy to manage dogs that would pose no problem for a single sitter despite their strength and size. When I arrived, I discovered that Bear and Stella are very reactive dogs that lash out aggressively on every animal they see on the street. Nienke doesn’t think it’s a problem. She advised me to pull them up by their collar whenever that happens which I find both hurtful to the dogs and completely inefficient. After sustaining several injuries on my hands because the dogs’ pull on the leash was too strong, I started researching how I can teach them out of reactivity. It turned out that a simple treat technique can work wonders if one tries which unfortunately their owner never did. Nienke accused me of being unreliable and disorganised in her review of my sit, while she never once raised any concern during the sit. The entire time we had very friendly communications. I cared for Bear and Stella according to her instructions, never left them alone for more than 4-5 hours, responded to all her messages in matter of minutes, collected parcels for her, gave her travel recommendations when she went to Oxford, made myself available for her friends to come and collect stuff from the house. Moreover, before her departure, I explicitly asked her if she wants me to send her daily updates about the dogs and she said no. In turn I reassured her that I’ll immediately notify her in case of any problem. Based on her review, it seems that she was very concerned for the dogs’ well being which leaves me wondering why she didn’t ask me for more updates throughout the three weeks that she was away. An experience to avoid.
