Ben was friendly and polite over messages and in person when he came to pick up the keys. That’s about where the positives ended. He lied to us multiple times about the time he actually spent at home, looking after our cat Mr Meow. We understand that people might have work on or want to go and explore the city, but he was gone from early in the morning until late at night everyday. And also having our housesitter lie to us is a major red flag. When we arrived home - the apartment stunk of cat urine, and surely enough - the bathroom floor was sticky with it (as if someone has quickly smudged it around with a paper towel instead of actually cleaning up). There was also cat urine trapped under the litter tray. And finally, the most upsetting thing - our cat Mr Meow. He was extremely stressed, zooming around and meowing loudly, and then proceeded to spray our suitcases. This is NOT something he’s ever done after any housesitter we had in the past and we had over 10 different people! Perhaps this was a one-off busy weekend for Ben, or a difficult period in life - but solving it through lying and at my cat’s expense is not the way to go.
