We have just had the best week staying in Alastair and Kathy’s beautiful and comfortable home, and looking after Sika. She is just the sweetest, loveable and most well-behaved dog and we feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to care for her. She is gentle even when playing with you, loves sofa cuddles (but gives you space too) and doesn’t pester you at all when you’re eating, like a lot of dogs might. You do have to be very vigilant on walks with her as she can be reactive towards other dogs, being a rescue; we found she was happiest and passed dogs confidently (and generally ignored them!) when given plenty of space - we tended to avoid narrow paths for this reason as she was a bit too close to other dogs for comfort - but if you’re confident and experienced in walking reactive dogs you’ll have no issues at all. We had many enjoyable walks with her, including to the coast every day (a 20 minute walk) and taking her in the car to the beautiful National Trust Penrose Estate and walking through the Estate to the Loe Bar and the coastal path at Porthleven. As she can’t be left alone for long, we visited nearby places and really appreciated the local area including the Lizard (a cuppa and home-made cake and seal-watching at the most-southerly cafe overlooking Lizard Point is a must!), the stunningly picturesque Kynance Cove (at low-tide is best for full-effect), and the lovely harbourside at Porthleven. Mullion Village itself is lovely and has a couple of small shops for essentials, with larger supermarkets in nearby Helston. There is also a lovely pub just around the corner which serves great food. Alastair kindly put us in touch with a local dog sitter which gave us the option of going out in the evening for dinner, as Sika can’t be left alone in the evenings. The village is small enough so that everything is within a few minutes’ walk; and the stunning beaches at Pollurian Cove and Poldhu are both a 20 minute walk from the cottage. We can also highly recommend the cakes at the cafe at the Chocolate Factory and Craft Centre (and the chocolate too of course!), only a 15 minute walk away. This was the most enjoyable sit for us so far, Mullion is situated in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is an excellent base to explore from. Alastair was brilliant and very kind, helpful and communicative. We would happily sit for Sika again in the future if given the opportunity!
