Above and beyond. Everything about this sit was filled with ease and joy. Chris and Andy are amazing hosts and great communicators. They have a lovely home in a very safe area very close to everything. And the puppies... so sweet and fun. They each have very strong and completely different personalities. Like 100% different. Abbie is spunky, speedy and loves being as close as possible to you. Ollie will stay to himself for the first 2 days or so, but at some point the switch will flip and he will come out and be ready for pets. Top notch sit. Couldn't ask for better. We look forward to coming back!
An interesting but challenging sit. I stayed for 3 months and during that time provided pet sitting for a total of 27 days (in two stints). The remoteness and the proximity to the forest and the Baltic were great. So many birds (including eagles, swans, cranes, heron) and larger animals including moose. A real dream for nature lovers and mushroom foragers, in particular. Katrin taught me to identify edible mushrooms and it was really fun to hunt for them. There are three cats. Misslan is sweet and calm, though definitely lets you know her boundaries. She has a neurological impairment so she can seem a little mysterious. She is very easy though, and I spent time cuddling with her on the couch and combing her long hair. Sivka is the hilarious one who is always on the go. Beautiful and inquisitive, Sivka is a joy to be around, always making me laugh. She is pleased to do her duty of catching mice and, unfortunately, birds. Mjaugust is the elder statesman. Possibly my favorite cat ever, which is saying a lot. He is smart and unperturbable, and tolerates the shenanigans of Sivka with royal aplomb. I miss him. The sauna was incredible and I enjoyed the traditional dip in the Baltic followed by the sauna. Really amazing. The challenges had to do with things that I was unprepared for when I arrived. I did not know that Mjaugust has diabetes and requires blood sugar testing, insulin, and two other medications. (I knew he had been lost and then was found, but I was not told the details). I learned to test blood sugar and I already knew how to give injections, but testing blood sugar is not a task I prefer and likely would not have accepted the housesit if I had known in advance. I was also not aware of the following: no running water in the housesitter’s cabin (available in a separate bath house); I was asked to urinate in the bushes to avoid the toilet’s discharge of urine directly outside the bathhouse; the composting toilet often requires “settling” of the feces to make room for more deposits and this I was advised to do with a twig; there is a camera inside the main house that I learned about after I arrived; the hot water in the shower lasts approximately 4 minutes; there is a zero-waste policy and this can be a little challenging if you are not used to it; the sit description said there would be no duties if the host was home, however, Katrin asked me to conduct daily cat visits to acclimate them to me and learn the medical requirements (that lasted about 25 days, which was likely two weeks longer than necessary). In all, these unexpected things required a lot of getting used to. Katrin did many things to make my stay more pleasant including my laundry and when it became too cold to wash up dishes outside, she took my dishes up to the house and washed them and then delivered them to me. She gathered recycling and garbage and took care to be sure the cabin and the bath house was heated properly, particularly during the severe early cold snap. She was responsive when I needed things (such as groceries and a water filter for the well water) and offered to let me stay as long as I wished. Her family (who do not live on the island) were kind and helpful when they visited. I enjoyed aspects of the stay but would advise real caution when sitting in late fall/winter when life becomes much more challenging. This is a sit for a person used to rough living and doesn’t mind rolling with whatever might happen (such as the electricity going out).
Kim, her dogs and her turtle are adorable and very sweet. Each dog has a charming personality. Furthermore, the house is located in a beautiful place. Kim is a very nice person, easy to get along with, fun and understanding. You can see her dedication and love for her pets and for animals in general and another plus is that she is quite flexible. In fact, she makes me remember; “Life is short, trying to take it easy and enjoy it is the key.” Thanks Kim for everything!
Mardi gave us a good rundown of how to care for Frankie when introducing us to her, and also included some tips on the local area which we were grateful for! Frankie was easy to care for and we enjoyed going for walks on the beach with her- she loved going off leash and exploring the beach near us. Mardi was contactable throughout the stay, which was appreciated. We’d definitely recommend Mardi and Frankie! 😊
Gus, Cilla, Doris, and Beryl stole our hearts right away. It was hard not to fall in love with such a wonderful family of animals. The setting is beyond spectacular. The North Yorkshire Moors are so stunning and right at the doorstep. We only had time to explore a fraction of all we wanted to see! We saw rainbows, sparrow hawks, abbey ruins, moorland, and sheep and we couldn’t get enough. The house is very comfortable and we felt quite at home. The icing on the cake was the lovely couple, Mark and Rob. They welcomed us with open arms the night before we left with a fabulous meal and wine. We honestly felt like we made wonderful life-long friends. Next time we sit anywhere even remotely near I’m sure we’ll get together. Anyone should leap at the chance to sit for them!
