Trip and Roxie were excellent sitters, they took great care of our house and dog. We were especially grateful that they sent us pictures of our dog at home and out on adventures with them. They communicated well and arrived early to meet us in person before we left. Highly recommend!
Charlie was the best! Attentive, great communicating, neat, and my little fur babes acted like we were never gone. We would definitely have Charlie house sit for us again. It was such a pleasure having her.
4 stars: More important info about the dogs prior to the sit would have prevented some surprises. The owner is great and the dogs are quirky sweethearts. I would have liked to be more prepared with knowledge of Dudley & Oscar’s usual (& major) tendencies. Niki: Very generous, welcoming, timely communication & great in-person conversationalist, sit expectations were laidback, super accommodating & flexible I was housesitting in Ocean Grove during our meet and greet, a 2-3 hour transit ride away, but Niki very kindly went out of her way to pick me up so I could meet her boys, Dudley & Oscar, in advance, get a tour, & rundown of expectations/responsibilities. She also very generously offered me a ride to Geelong station before & after the sit. The boys (Dudley & Oscar): Meeting them in advance was important for several reasons: I was unavailable for an in-person handoff due to the timing of my previous sit, this was their first time under the care of a stranger, & this was the longest their mom was away from them. At the meet & greet—they barked & jumped up with kisses at the start (Oscar’s the jumper) but soon calmed down & quietly followed as Niki gave me a house tour. When we met again at the start of the sit they greeted me in the same manner & afterwards kept to themselves for the first 2 days, not having much interest in me, spending most of their time guarding the house through Niki’s bedroom window (usual behavior for them). Although both considered seniors (Dudley 13 & Oscar 12), grey facial hair is one of the only outward indications of their age. These stout boys LOVE food & walks, and enjoy people & the occasional pat (but not cuddles). They’re highly competitive amongst each other (daily struggle for dominance), prefer their own space (always keep an arm’s distance from one another), & do not tolerate other dogs. Dudley (Chihuahua mix?): The more laid back of the two, has the most adorable fox-like tail. He keeps to himself, mostly sleeps, follows along if you change rooms, & tries to steal Oscar’s food. He’s skittish with loud noises but both dogs start a racket whenever in an excited state: anything passes the house (human or animal), anyone coming through the door, & before eating & walks. Once aware of another dog, he whines, barks, lunges, & gets very worked up—resulted in full on fights during walks between him & Oscar at the start of our sit. Oscar (Jack Russell Terrier): More energetic & high energy (& inherently more of the trouble maker of the two). Followed closely at my heels 24/7. Hates kisses & dislikes being picked up. He was more affectionate than Dudley but the name Oscar the Grouch definitely suited him 😆—showed his teeth when uncomfortable & barked at Dudley until he’d get his favorite spot on the couch. When walked with Dudley he also barks & lunges at other dogs but I found they made Dudley more uneasy & irritated while Oscar was mesmerized by them (intense staring & distraction). It was more difficult breaking Oscar’s fixation on other dogs than Dudley. Oscar was also easily distracted by any people around. Oscar required a trip to the vet after picking at his rear toe nail until bloody. Luckily, Niki’s friend Clark was able to bring us since the vet was not walking distance. I learned quite a bit & gained a lot of good experience with the challenges this sit presented. Only 20min walks 1x/day before dinner required, but this was not enough for Oscar. Oscar always had energy to burn & if he didn’t release most of it through walks, he sought out trouble. Walks were also important since the dogs don’t have any toys nor do they play with one another. Walks 2x/day, @ 1hr+ each helped reduce indoor marking for both dogs, stopped excessive barking at the window, no more food guarding & general fighting, stopped Oscar’s habit of chewing up branches indoors, & made training possible (no more barking at you before meals & walks, no more jumping on me, walking nicely on lead, able to get their attention with people & dogs around etc.) They responded well to positive reinforcement: treats & praise. Oscar learns more quickly & although both are stubborn, Dudley was always more reluctant to follow. A note: The master bedroom bed is practically Oscar’s. Being a light sleeper + the duration of this sit, I relocated to one of the spare bedrooms to get quality sleep. I kept the door closed, otherwise Oscar never failed to hop into bed with me (adorable but meant I wasn’t sleeping). Oscar dislikes closed doors so he’d leave me early morning droppings outside of the door. I tried various routine changes to try & stop this, in addition to praising him when he pooped outdoors. It seemed effective though he left me a final present on my last morning. The challenges of this sit brought me great reward, and after finding a routine, my time with the boys was more enjoyable. Home & Location: House has plenty of room with a spacious, fully equipped kitchen, 4 bedrooms, and a large backyard for the boys. Great location on the main street and a short walk to the beach. Oscar especially enjoyed a daily shore walk & always tried to lead us there. Camper season was ending when this sit started. With campers along the shore it was much busier with lots of dogs and people, but once they left, the shore was absolutely wonderful & I got so lucky with the weather! The shore walk has a lovely sandy path with plenty of space to distance the boys from other dogs, PLENTY of garbage cans, many poop bag dispensers (refilled weekly), many watering stations for you & the dogs, as well as restrooms. Nearest grocer is IGA (very walkable) but I preferred the bus ride to Drysdale which has Coles, Woolies, & Aldi all within walking distance of one another. Recommendations: A lovely time away from the city in a spacious home for the more experienced sitter. Niki & her daughter are lovely people: very welcoming, generous, and accommodating. The boys are friendly & relaxed AFTER spending their energy. A day or two overlap may be beneficial since the boys are slow to warm up. I recommend avoiding dog walks on older streets which lack sidewalks & had territorial outdoor dogs unsupervised, not fenced & without leads! Newer streets have sidewalks, fencing, more streetlights, & often a nice small park or two. I personally enjoyed the offseason for the cool weather, quiet, & the ability to walk the dogs with less disturbances. Bringing treats along walks are useful for rewarding good behavior & minimizing dog conflicts.
If you are lucky enough to come across Gail and Robins’ future listings, don’t hesitate to apply, you will not regret it! Where do we start? Gail and Robin are two of the sweetest, gracious, most fun people we have ever been around! We were lucky enough to get to know and spend a few days with them before they left, and it was truly a highlight of our whole year (& we’ve been traveling for the entirety of 2022)! They did anything and everything to make us feel welcomed and comfortable during our 2 week sit. Our communication throughout the stay was easy and seamless, they were quick to answer any questions we had. Now onto the gang, a group of varying personalities that are a blast to be around! Gloria is the eldest and loves to play fetch, you will always catch her following you with a tennis ball in her mouth. Hattie is still a pup with a lot of energy that loves being the center of attention and belly rubs! Joey and Prince took a couple days of warming up, but they just as easily stole our hearts too. Joey is always up for a treat and Prince loves to have cuddles at night. We had the best time hanging out and playing with the girls and boys in the backyard and going for peaceful walks around their beautiful neighborhood. Finally, it is hard to describe how beautiful Gail and Robin’s home is, and pictures do not do it justice! It is a converted barn that has so much history and character. We truly felt like we were living out a cottage fairytale. The wifi was also incredibly fast and we were so comfortable we did not want to leave! Overall if we ever have the ability we would absolutely fly across the country to do this housesit again! If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity you should jump on it! Between the amazing owners, fun animals, and beautiful home, you will have zero regrets! Thank you Robin and Gail for everything, we do hope to see you guys again <3
We throughly enjoyed our stay in Debra’s beautiful home. The house is in a great location and beautifully decorated. The two kitties, Boris and Bernie were so easy to care for. They take awhile to warm up, but once they do, Bernie is a snuggler. Boris likes to keep his distance. I would definitely recommend this sit !
Had a wonderful time looking after Zulu & Brûlé, they are such wonderful, friendly and loving cats! I’ve never met cats with such a sweet temperament - they know exactly how to wrap you around their little paw! Diane and Sal are the most friendly and welcoming people. They made sure I felt very at home and I loved my time in their apartment. It’s a beautiful space, very comfortable with all mod-cons & gorgeous views - it’s in a great location for getting around the city too! I would sit for them again any time & wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them!
I thank Marsha and Paul for letting me look after little gorgeous Chloe and their lovely home while they went away on holiday. I enjoyed my time there very much and loved Chloe's company while I was working online. She is a beautiful little soul, softly communicating when she wanted attention and always keen to go for our daily extended walks. It was easy to stay in touch with Marsha and Paul during the whole time, sending regular updates with photos :-) and hearing back from them with their overseas updates. I had a very pleasant and great time with Manny, Oakley and Max. The three of them are totally relaxed and easy to look after. We cuddled a lot and I was woken up in the morning by at least one of them. The communication with Patrick was great. I can only recommend a sit.
