Leaving feedback here feels a bit weird because I've never done it like this with friends before.... And Alice has definitely become my best Scottish friend :-) She made me feel at home from the first second and so I was able to enjoy my time in Lauder to the fullest. Arthur and Sunna live a true cat paradise life with chasing mice, sleeping in the warmth and cuddles whenever they please (after a few days I was lucky enough to be considered worthy :-)). And Zuko is just bubbling over with joie de vivre and affection. We both had an incredible amount of fun exploring the grounds, practising new tricks and cuddling up in front of the TV in the evenings. I have already met a few dogs and so far none of them had such a soft coat or such a quick perception as Zuko. In short: my first house-sitting experience has exceeded all expectations!!! That's why I spent a few more days with Alice & co when she returned home from her holiday. I am just infinitely grateful to her for the great experiences and her uncomplicated manner, her brilliant sense of humour and above all for her generosity.

I had a great sit with Guinness in Hillsboro! He is a beautiful, mellow, interactive and vocal cat. He loves going outside and has a cute cat friend that comes to visit. He was friendly at first but once he got more comfortable with me, he would hang out next to me and loved attention. Toward the end of the stay he would sleep parts of the night with me.

He is particular about how you pet and handle him, and will nip at you to communicate annoyance. Each time it was because I got distracted while petting him and wasn't paying attention to his responses. This only happened a few times, and each time I just apologized and held out my hand for inspection. He would sniff to make sure I was ok and then usually lean into my hand to resume petting the way he wanted. Once or twice he just sat back down so I left him alone, but moments later he was ready for attention again. He is very firm about his boundaries but also very forgiving and loving.

The house is very comfortable and well kept. The kitchen is small (the rest of the house is quite roomy) but everything you need to cook is there and in great condition. I was there in winter so I didn't spent much time outside but in better weather I can imagine sitting in the lovely back yard and watching Guinness run around with his friend.

The house is just one block away from the train into Portland. I rely on public transportation so I was relieved by how easy it was to go back and forth between Hillsboro and downtown Pdx. The train runs about every 15 minutes all day. There are multiple bus lines within a few minutes walk but I didn't need to use them.

In one direction from the house, charming downtown Hillsboro is a 10 to 15 minute walk. It is quaint, quiet and has some unique spots to visit for food, drink or shopping. In the other direction is a standard city area that is mostly unremarkable, but there are a few small grocery stores that are worth a visit. There are no big stores within walking distance, but the small grocers have unique offerings. I recommend Yesenia's for the baked goods and fresh made tamales!

I loved sitting for Guinness and would do it again without hesitation!
