This housesit was near Ostuni in Italy, where Pat and Susan have a house in the rural region close to two lovely towns. We had a 5-day hand over period where I was introduced to the place, the animals and the day schedules. Pat and Susan have been two great hosts in that hand over, they have a good sense of humour and are genuine and kind. It was originally planned that I would take care of their dog Tilly and two pigs Paolo and Franco. But the universe had something more in mind, as we found an abandoned kitten next to the road. I felt like a child who wanted to say "can we keep her pleeeeaase?" But luckily Pat and Susan didn't need any convincing by me, so Bella the kitten was introduced to the household too! During my stay it has been a true pleasure to take care of the animals and the garden, where I have become calmer. There is limited internet connection, but honestly that was a plus side for me, because I didn't want to be dragged into my phone every other minute. I can definitely recommend this housesit for anyone who wants to experience a change of pace, getting out of that crowded city life and just surround yourself with a calm environment and lovely pets.
By the time anyone is reading this review, I am absolutely convinced that this will be a fabulous sit for anyone, although if during 2022 / early 2023 I would think that a couple or two friends who are very experienced with a young dog would be a better fit. Also folk prepared to continue the consistence and training put into place for Amos, and for Jasper (although Jasper is an older, mature, chilled out dog already, he's going to guide his little brother into calmer ways). We saw an enormous change in Amos from the start of the sit, and I am sure he will very soon be a super dog companion for humans and also for Jasper, who was starting to think he wasn't quite such an annoying little brother! Claire had tried very hard with Amos, but his age and sensitivities meant that the right coins hadn't quite dropped in the right slots, but they were beginning to. And I know Claire is working very hard with some extra professional help to ensure that Amos can grow into the wonderful boy that he really is. It's a joy to see and very rewarding, but you will need to be prepared to watch and work with him while he needs consistent guidance if you want to enjoy this sit. Although you will be staying in an incredible environment, you are on a wilding project with all of the challenges that having wild roaming animals presents with walking dogs, especially a young, inquisitive dog. At present, Amos is working on his lead manners - it's an extremely challenging environment for him, with so many smells and surprises. But I know that Claire is working on this as, at times, both dogs need to be on a lead. In the case of an Autumn stay, this may be at all times, with rutting stags and longhorns tussling for dominance - don't worry about being safe yourself however, they can be easily avoided. There is a small field at the end of the first track from the cottage, which seemed to be a safe area for them to run around and I believe there are other areas in the village where they can run around. There are badgers in the tree line to the left of the first track - look for the holes near the track for a gauge of their area - so keeping the dogs out of there is important - although neither headed in there with bad intentions. If you pop out quietly at dusk or a little later, you may be lucky enough to see the badgers playing, especially magical if you're there during a full moon. Claire's home is warm and bright, with wonderful views over the Knepp Estate, with regular visits from the free roaming 'wild' animals that roam there - which is especially thrilling when fallow, roe and red deer stags decide to stand majestically in the field in full view of the house and sometimes extremely close to the lovely garden cabin. I highly recommend eating your supper in the cabin and watching to see what delights wander in front of the window. It's a real privilege to stay in this wonderful area, right in the heart of the wilding project. Claire is a lovely person to communicate with, considerate, kind and provides all the information you would wish for and more. I wish the three amigos, Claire, Jasper and Amos nothing but love and joy as they all work together to form a cooperatively calm human and doggie unit in their natural oasis.
Ken and Paige are such a lovely couple. Communication was great with regard to any questions that came about. Their home is beautiful, clean, and in a wonderful location. The beach is a short 10 minute car ride away. Cathy and I arrived first and immediately fell in love with Gracie. Then Rob arrived and it was again, an instant love affair. She’s an older gal with a hilarious personality. We are big walkers so we really enjoyed going on our daily forest walks with her. We also loved sleeping with her each night as she jumped from bed to bed getting comfy. To watch her get comfortable is hilarious. Storms are not her friend. However, having dealt with anxious rescues my whole life, I was able to calm this sweet girl pretty quickly. We loved this sit and would definitely love to return.
This was a very last minute sit, so Alae and I didn’t meet before the sit but the communication and hand-over of the keys was well done. Alae’s apartment is super, modern with all appliances possible and a fantastic view over the river. Her kitten is the cutest thing you’ll ever see and so playful and cuddly. I fell in love with her and miss her already. We had a great time together, I can only recommend Alea and Katty, it’s been a pleasure to be guest in their home.
It was wonderful watching Zoe and Olivia! They were very sweet, and very rambunctious. I'd love for the chance to watch them again if I'm ever in town!
Dayna and John were so welcoming and helpful. Their place was so magical it was a privilege to be their sitter. We fell in love with all the dogs and the Danes were gentle giants! It made our holiday special. Highly recommended and I'd love to do it all again. - Rebecca
