Ahhh…these pups have a way of ambling into your heart. Kiva, the girl with soft caramel-colored eyes, radiates tenderness and curiosity, both. She plays tug of war with her sister, barks at feathered visitors and curls up for long naps in an upstairs bedroom to recharge. Her sister Jazzy, the unstoppable ball player who delivers each ball with a look that says “You do love me, right?”, will spend the day with you, never missing an opportunity for a deeper bond. And their food…delivered three times a day…is met with an enthusiasm that is simply unparalleled in my experience with other dogs. I wondered what it would be like to cook for people who greeted their meal with this measure of exuberance! Maine is a wondrous place if you love the natural world…and Patty and Stephens charming home is tucked in the middle of that wonder. I had the opportunity to spend the night with them before they set out. Patty cooked a delicious meal; we could have talked on many subjects for many days. I slipped in like an old friend because they are people who welcome just that. My eyes filled with tears when I said goodbye to Kiva and Jazzy. I have little doubt that a future rendezvous would be overflowing with dog and human happiness.
Ruby is a lovely little Border Terrier… gentle… walks well on the lead… does not wander off and hardly ever barked; she was great company playing ball and following me around. Clive kindly picked me up at Pluckley station and a sitter without a car should know that this (1 mile) is the closest public transport and locals told me the bus service stopped over a year ago. Clive and Lesley are friendly and welcoming inviting me to help myself to anything I needed. The house (a beautifully converted barn) is stunning. The garden must have taken a lot of hard work to get it established with vegetable gardens, shrubs and grassed areas looking out onto open fields. It’s a I very peaceful place that you will not want to leave. There is a walk across fields and through a wood that is Ruby’s routine but you should know that the surrounding lanes can be quite busy with wide farm vehicles and fast moving traffic and for example I did not feel it safe for Ruby to walk her up to Pluckley village (1 mile) where there is a shop, post office and very good butcher. We did walk to the Rose and Crown pub (1 mile) which was friendly with good food and the lane was not as busy. I guess what I am leading up to is that a sitter ideally would have a car to get Ruby out on some decent walks and it’s not far from some nice beaches for that. For a sitter without a car, it would be,on a long sit, abit limited where you could walk her safely and she is not the kind of dog to leave for hours while you explore further afield as she loves to be with you. In that situation a short-sit works well without a car and three days was just right to sit with a book and some great dog company in a restful place. I would certainly sit for Lesley and Clive again for a short sit and thanks for inviting me down.
The house was tucked away in the woods and there many wild friends to engage ranging from deer to coyotes and even a couple of skunks. Sky was well trained and a delight to play with and he fetches the ball like a professional. He drools quite a bit but is a cuddle bug and was very relaxed around other dogs. Bear did well with his in/out privileges and Calle was super sweet and very good at reminding me when it was time for dinner. Sandi and Rick were very hospitable, responsive and sent lots of pics of their travels. Thanks for letting me do a deep dive of Orinda and all the beautiful hikes all around!
I cannot say enough about this sit. Sweet, lovable Wrigley melts your heart at first glance. And I'm pretty sure he always knows what you're thinking. He's super smart and inquisitive, turning his head from side to side when you're talking to him as if to be sure to catch every word. And I'm sure he does! The home is a 30s bungalow and very elegant, clean, and comfortable. Carol left excellent instructions re both Wrigley and their home, and had shelves ready for your items in the refrigerator, your choice of beds, etc... I need to mention the location, too, as it's perfect, just a block from coffee shops and restaurants! Absolutely LOVED this sit.
