Christine and her husband were great. I got there while they were still there for a few days so I could learn about the dogs and see their routine a bit. They were very welcoming and you can tell they’ve had sitters in the past and let me stay for a couple days longer than the sit itself too which was nice! The house was very clean and you have your own space on the opposite side of the house from them with a work area, bed and bathroom so if you work from home while they’re there this is great. The dogs were so cute and just wanted love whenever you could give it to them. Christine has trained them so they do have certain commands to follow so you need to be comfortable with learning how she has them trained. With that being said they are food motivated as well because of this haha. So just prepare for them to want a little treat most of the time. You need to be comfortable walking bigger dogs as well. Fitz can do well on his own but Oakley is still learning and being trained with her reactions. The dogs do wake up very early so that is something to note. Overall they are great and will warm up quickly. I would sit for Chris and Alan again if given the chance!
What we loved: The views, the views and the views. This is sunset paradise! You look tens of kilometers away, you see mountains, forests, valleys and Xátiva castle. It’s almost like a canopy tower; birds fly by the window whilst you look down upon the surrounding forests and orange plantations. It’s simply amazing and you enjoy it every day, all day. The rural life. The silence at night, the noise when it’s windy; being one with the elements. The last bit of the road isn’t even asphalted; just a forest road! We love it. The location is unimprovable. The wooden house; especially for our Christmas stay. There is no Christmasier house. It’s comfortable and spacious, has the nice wooden-house-noises and it’s easy to keep warm. Oh, and did we mention the views through the many windows? :-) The Dogs. Leyla is an absolute darling, continuously asking for more cuddles, and loving you from the first second. Gryff takes a looong time to warm up to you but after a week (or two) he’s cuddly and a funny, entertaining dog. He barks a lot, but it’s not too annoying. Enc is a sweet and playful guy who wags his tail kindly, but hardly gets close (only for a treat ;-)). And Seuss, well, she was a gipsy for the first four weeks, “camping” further down on the property and would only come searching for food every once a while. It took several weeks for her to allow us to caress her. But she’s been happy with the other dogs so all good. The forest hikes. We found out way too late that Leyla and Enc are actually great company on your walks!! Leyla stays close all the time, she’s simply perfect to have around. Enc stays up front and is a fantastic pathfinder; he remains within sight distance. His sight distance, that is. So when you don’t see him, he’s probably close anyway. He keeps distance from other people which can be an issue on narrow paths. But he’ll find you. We’d bring treats to give them when they would listen well. The area is a true paradise for mountains and forests. (We didn’t bring the dogs into town or through the more inhabited areas down from the house.) To take into account: It’s not the cleanest nor the tidiest house you’ll find. Chris and Amanda have many hobbies and many things, so the house is quite full. That’s something you have to be able to accept. We made sure we cleaned every space we frequently use in the beginning, and were very comfortable afterwards. Chris and Amanda will leave the house cleaner for you next time. We have had great communication with them, they are super helpful with whatever you need. We ask quite a lot of questions but they’ve always been patient and clear; all good!
It might not be fair to write a glowing review of Jamie + Mary & their lovely home and pets. Why is that you might ask? I used to work with Jamie back in Minneapolis and we've been friends since. We've spent Thanksgivings and NYE and random evenings at the house with the pets for years now. Not to say it is a walk in the park - it's still another persons home and precious pets, and elderly cats DO require some TLC that is above a younger cat. Like my first SUBQ! Also this isn't fair because I'll tell you that if we are in town and they need a sit, I'll fight you to be the one to do it. :) It's great to FINALLY be in the right place at the right time to avail our friends of our professional services. I only wish that circumstances were different from many aspects. That way we could have hugged you on your way out and on your way back. Ten thumbs up. Love you guys. Especially Thor. And Jack. And Wim, the softest cat in the world. Z&J
