Tricia is a great housesitter who took wonderful care of our our two cats and left our place in sparkling condition. Communication was very clear and she navigated number situations during her stay (such as coordinating our cleaner) with ease. It was clear she had significant housesitting experience and was also very flexible about some slight changes to our itinerary.
Willo is the perfect house sitter! She gave our Rue lots of love and attention while she was here. She sent lots of photos and videos so we knew Rue was happy. She left the house in perfect order, took out the trash, and cleaned up a barf with no complaints, too. Willo has a sunny and fun personality - a true pleasure to communicate with. I would invite her back in a hot second.
We have been home and pet sitters for 14 years. Nearly six years on Trusted House Sitters and several more on other sites and as paid sitters. We’ve been entrusted with 8 figure homes for people who need our extensive experience and discretion. In all of these experiences, we have not had a sit as stressful and unenjoyable as this one. Starting with what was positive: The home was clean and in a safe area. The house’s back garden sits against a forest filled with wildlife and multiple walking paths. Everything else: The most stressful part of this sit was dealing with Leslie. We found her interactions with us to be condescending and passive-aggressive. At times, she also gaslighted us. Demands that we speak daily were very unusual, especially for a home that doesn’t have an ill pet. On a day when she could not reach us (because I needed to set a boundary) she sent WhatsApp messages all day with increasing urgency. When I responded the same evening she told me we were “no better than the last sitters”. She then expressed that she thought we were "dead in my house". Despite our extensive experience, she required constant communication. When we told her we would communicate if there were any problems, and referred her to our five star reviews, she dismissed what other homeowners had to say about us, saying that “people lie on those”. Finally, we reached an agreement where she contacted Paul every day via email about the mail or the H.O.A., but also reiterating things we already knew and to say things like, “it would be nice to get an update”. To be clear, Paul sent her regular updates with photos. Mail: The sitters who were in this home before us had their mail forwarded to Leslie’s home and for some reason, after they’d left, their mail continued to arrive. Leslie tried to get us to open their mail and send her photos of it, even of their medical records. When we refused, she made condescending comments about our educational level and that she was a nurse, so medical records didn’t make her squeamish. Paul requested multiple times that she contact the other sitters to resolve the issue, but she refused to. After he mentioned that it was illegal to open other people’s mail, Leslie relented. Neighbors: We were told not to talk to the neighbors and do not mention where Leslie was. This put us in an awkward position as her neighbors wanted to be friendly and we usually have pleasant experiences with neighbors on sits, but we worked to avoid them and this made seeing them on a regular basis uncomfortable. We've never had to act like this on a sit before. When we asked if we could have friends from Seattle over for lunch, as this was a six month sit in an area with very little to do, we were told, “I don’t want ‘other’ strangers in my house.” Again, we’ve done this for 14 years all over the world and never had that be an issue, especially on a long-term sit. House: We were very uncomfortable in this home as Leslie made everything seem precious. All of the surfaces had very specific cleaning and usage instructions despite being normal, modern build materials. We were told the grout in the bathroom was “self-sealing” and to only use certain cleaners on it. However, it didn’t come clean easily. We tried a basic, store bought cleaner, a hydrogen peroxide/baking soda solution and a diluted vinegar/water solution but the grout split. We offered to pay for a grout repair kit, but heard nothing from Leslie after we left. While we were there, the air conditioner stopped working, along with the microwave. We did nothing out of ordinary daily use of each. When we communicated these issues to her, she said there should be nothing wrong with them as the house is only six years old, implying that we must have done something to them. We had a conversation early on in the sit with her and told her how she made us feel, like she didn’t trust or respect us. She said she needed to “manage her house”. But, in reality she went out of her way to make us feel like we were her employees rather than providing a mutually beneficial exchange. In addition, Leslie required that we pay for utilities, something that has never been asked of us before, regardless of the length of the sit.
