This was such a bad experience, that I have no idea how to leave an appropriate review.

I was intentionally mislead and misinformed.

The THS rules/guidelines explicitly prohibit another person living on the premises with the sitter, during the sit.

I was very clear that I had no desire to be responsible for another person living in the apartment with me.

I was very clear that I had no desire to share living space with another person. Regardless of how mature and independent that person was.

To clarify;

The sit was arrange months in advance, and Sven & Sabrina were keen for me to accept the sitting and book my flights immediately. Their holiday was booked to go visit their 17-year-old daughter abroad. A few days after I’d accepted the sitting and booked my flights I received a message to say there was a change of “plan”, but that it was non-urgent.

When we spoke on the phone, it transpired that there was a “crisis” and they had to repatriate their daughter due to Visa problems, and there was concern she would be there illegally if they didn’t get her home immediately.

Naturally they were very distressed and urgently looking to find flights to get her home. This was the second such emergency they had dealt with through their daughters year-out to study or work abroad, and they informed me that they had already lost thousands of Euros on cancelled flights and plans.

I empathised with their situation and suggested they seek advice from the Embassy.

Naturally, I wished them well and I declined the sit. I informed them that I’d try to find similar sits in the area, as my flights were non-refundable.

So, within a matter of days of first ever talking with the Sven and Sabrina, I had an expense of 200 Euros, just for agreeing to sit for them.

This wasn’t an ideal position for me. I spent the next few days looking for sits anywhere near Hamburg, in Germany and surrounding countries.

We had kept in touch and as I had already asked if they would be willing to cover the cost of my non-refundable flights, I agreed to inform them if I was able to use the flights for another sit instead.

I noticed that their sit-dates were still active on the THS site, so asked if circumstances had changed again.

They suggested a phone call, and were glad to let me know that they’d managed to get their daughter home safely.

During the group video call, they confirmed that they were still going on holiday, and that due to their daughters age (17yo), German laws require that she had to be attending school or in work full-time. And as such, she wouldn’t be allowed to live alone at home, nor have the time to properly take care of their animals.

I had already clarified that I wasn’t willing to sit for them with their daughter back living at home, and explained that to do so would put me in the unreasonable position of being responsible for her well-being, without having any of the authority of a legal guardian. And that it was a legal and moral grey-area that I was not comfortable with, and not willing to enter into.

They were still keen to re-invite me to sit for them, explaining that they had already made alternative living arrangements for their daughter, and that she would be living with family and friends whilst her parents were on holiday, and assured me that it wouldn't be a problem at all.

They were so welcoming and keen for me to re-agree to sit, that I had no reason to doubt their word and trusted that arrangements were in place as promised. And, that this would be a regular THS sit.

On arriving in Hamburg, it transpired that I had been mislead and misinformed, and non of the arrangements were properly in place as they had repeatedly promised and assured me.

Naturally – I found myself to be in the exact situation that I had explicitly declined to be in!

I had no desire to spend my time in Germany living with an adolescent. And yet, that's exactly the position I found myself to be in – with all the baggage and drama that that would entail.

In all honesty, I still don’t know why they believed they were entitled to mislead me and take advantage of my good-will. In my last phone call with Sven, he gave a half-hearted apology and said “it was a risk”, but they had hoped it would work out.

It didn’t work out.

We had a great time taking care of Frankie and staying at Johnny’s place. They were very communicative and friendly. Frankie is very well behaved, lovable, and we didn’t have any troubles with her care. Thanks for the great stay!

Emma
I had a wonderful stay at Emma's. Emma is one of those hosts that make you feel welcome immediately. She has created a lovely space that is comfortable and inviting, so it was a joy to be in her house. Communication before and during the sit was excellent. Looking after Kiks, her adorable cat, was an absolute delight. I highly recommend this sit.

Lia and DJ are delightfully kind and thoughtful people. Their home is very sweet and a place they care for with great love as we did too while we were there housesitting and pet sitting for their adorable, sensitive and loving dog Lexus. We fell in love with her and had a great time hanging out together, taking short walks with spectacular views and having some fun play time too. We were attentive to Lexus’s eating schedule and sensitivity to breathing for walking at specific times of day and it was all very easy for our commitment and dedication to the animals first and foremost. Would love to stay again and care for Lexus should it work out.

Good listing, close to metro. Shumai is a very excitable dog; when you come in the house she is definitely a jumper. Owners are very communicative.

We had a fantastic three weeks at Barbara's home in a beautiful area on the Dorset / Devon border. We particularly enjoyed our time with Molly and Eilee, 2 gorgeous dobermans who are so affectionate and love a good walk and a cuddle on the sofa. We also enjoyed looking after the cats and chickens and having fresh eggs every day. There are so many fantastic rural and coastal walks on the doorstep and with all the amenities of Axminster and Lyme Regis nearby, you couldn't ask for a better location.
