We chatted with Elizabeth over a month ago about our house sit-we video chatted and showed her around the house and our babies and answered any questions she had-she texted a few days prior to the sit to make sure all was good-

Elizabeth went above and beyond to make sure our babies were taken care of and even cleaned the dog messes we didnt have time to clean in the backyard wo even being asked:) our house was left very tidy and you would not even know anyone was here and she watered the plants as well!!

Our dogs and kitties seemed very content on our return and Elizabeth checked in to make sure all was good-

Highly recommend Elizabeth for your housesitting needs!! It's so nice to have peace of mind while you are away and happy animals is the best sign-

Thx 😊

Jennifer
Jen was a perfect host: responsive and informative about her pups needs and routines, eager to ensure I had what I needed to care for them and enjoy my stay, and generally a lovely person. Jinja and Tebbe were a dream. Different pups for sure, and perfect complements of hilarious and sweet. Jen's home is lovely, comfortable and clean and in a lovely rural setting. I would sit again for Jen and the pups anytime.

Cynthia
Bailey is such a friendly, sweet golden. She was the best companion! The house has old Marin charm, which I absolutely loved (and fondly remember from my childhood). It feels like a tree house, with nature views out every window and a lovely deck, perched on the hillside in a beautiful, safe neighborhood. Cynthia and her kids were so warm and friendly and Cynthia was a great communicator. As a recent empty nester, I loved the cozy family feeling of the house! Bailey loves to walk and there are so many amazing walks nearby. You can hike up the neighborhood to gorgeous nature trails or down to a community walking path that takes you along a creek to the cute little Main Street of Larkspur with restaurants and shops. I loved my outings with Bailey, exploring this unique area. I hope to come back again sometime!

Staying at Suzanne home while sitting Axel and Selassy was an absolute joy. Both are lovable and wonderful companions during walks. Axel is very curious and adventurous. Selassy is more quite and loves to play with sticks. Even if they are "grandfathers", they still enjoy long trips (8-15km) and short runs (5-6km).
The landscapes in the area provided amazing alternatives for stunning hikes.
It was a fantastic experience to met this lovely family.

Heidy
When we arrived at Stephen and Heidy's apartment in Harrison, they were very kind and friendly to us. They showed us their home, the pets’ food routine, answered any questions we had, and gave us everything we needed to properly care for their furry friends. They were responsive and helpful throughout the sit as well, although it is clear that they have not read/do not respect THS rules and policies. One morning we were informed that a friend would be coming over to pick something up from the apartment. It was not posed to us as a question but a statement, and we were informed that this friend has a key to the apartment so we would not need to stay in the apartment all day. Regardless, while we were home, we would have to be prepared at any moment for someone to step in. This is a breach of THS policy, but we didn’t say anything because we didn’t feel it was worth the fuss. When we asked what time this friend would be coming over, we were not given a time. They never ended up coming to pick the thing up. Heidi also had a heavy, fragile package arrive during our stay. When we asked her about it, she said she had been expecting it since last week, and asked that we move it into the garage. We understand that no one is perfect, but these and other little things added up over our stay and we just wished we had been told a lot of things in advance.

The apartment was very nice and roomy. It should be noted that it is an apartment inside of a house, not a house as it is listed. There are neighbors in an upstairs apartment and you can hear them walking around throughout the apartment. We could only hear them talking or playing music if we were by the basement stairs. Stephen and Heidy had the apartment decorated for Halloween and it felt really festive. It was quite spacious and comfortable. It wasn't the cleanest, as they left behind full trash, dirty dishes, and used pee pads. Overall though it was nice and cozy and we made an effort to leave it cleaner than we found it.

The area is also quite nice. Although the listing says Mamaroneck (probably just due to the wonky THS map), it is in the heart of Harrison, NY. It's a short walk away from the town center, filled with great places to check out. There's a grocery store, pharmacy, bagel shop, and Chinese, Japanese, and halal food, and more within a 5 minute walk. It feels very safe as well. There is a great park right down the street, and many more within a short drive, like Saxon Woods where we took Koko on a lovely 5 mile hike through some really beautiful fall scenery.

Another thing that is very important to note is that there is a camera inside of the home. It faces the front door/porch door/foyer area, and its sight extends into the kitchen and the hallway. This was not disclosed to us until moments before the homeowners left, which is very much against THS policy. It was not mentioned in the listing, interview, or welcome guide, which left us feeling a bit deceived. We were told the camera was on, recording video and audio, and would be used infrequently to check in on the pets and talk to them. We figured it would not be a huge issue for us staying the weekend, however we do want future petsitters to be aware of this. Since internal cameras are not allowed in THS policy, you are allowed to request it to be shut off. We could tolerate it for our brief stay, however we enjoy our privacy and would not have felt the same way if we stayed for anything longer than a weekend.

Koko is a handsome little man who just beams with excitement and energy, as well as anxiety. He very quickly became our shadow and would loyally follow us anywhere we went. Unfortunately, he is quite poorly behaved. Koko became incredibly defensive of us, almost immediately, to the point of acting aggressive toward the cats. This was particularly evident in the bedroom, where Koko would often bark at the cats, chase them, and even jump on them and pin them down. Despite constantly trying to dissuade this behavior, our only option was to physically separate Koko from the cats for the sake of the cats. The listing says that Koko is 4 months old and still potty training. Koko is now over a year old and still not fully potty trained. When we spoke with Heidy prior to agreeing to sit, she told us that Koko was potty-trained, and they kept pee pads in a bathroom “in case of an emergency”. However, it was pretty evident upon our arrival that he uses them for more than just emergencies because they were soaked with urine and subsequently left for us to replace. Throughout our stay, he used the pee pads a few times a day, even though we let him out every 2-3 hours as directed. Koko also did not alert us with any behavior when he needed to go outside. Koko is incredibly energetic, which is to be expected from a young Biewer Terrier. We were never able to tire him out, despite playing with him for hours and taking him hiking for miles with us. His energy/anxiety reached a point where we would be sitting on the couch watching a movie in the evening and the slightest movement, such as reaching to the coffee table to grab a drink, would send him running into the hallway in a frenzy of barking. Koko also playfully bites, which never hurts too bad because he is so small. He frequently bit our pant legs and pulled on them out of the blue. Generally, he walks quite poorly on a leash, and does not respond to most commands. He’s also dog reactive, which was not mentioned until we arrived.

Blu is the more outgoing of the cats. He’s incredibly pretty and soft, with long white fur and stunning blue eyes. It takes him a little warming up to playtime but he is happy to play after a little coaxing. Blu isn’t bothered much by Koko and the two generally compete for attention, which upsets Koko. Koko will bark at Blu if he gets too close to us, and sometimes Blu would run away and other times he would remain unphased. Blu also has a habit of sitting under the Christmas tree and chewing on the light bulbs. We informed Heidi of this and her response was essentially just “we know he does that, that’s his spot, and he does it because he is bored”. We played with the cats for about an hour, if not more, each day. Sometimes he would take a break from playing to sit under the tree, so we don’t think it is an issue with boredom. We ended up moving the lights further up the tree so they wouldn’t be as tempting, and that seemed to stop him from chewing on them. Overall, Blu is well-behaved and a real sweetheart.

Bella is a stunning black cat with a lovely personality. Unfortunately, she is constantly being bullied by Koko, so she spends much of her time in the basement. It is interesting that we were warned that Blu can be mean to Bella, yet we never really saw any examples of them being antagonistic to each other. Instead Koko would frequently lash out at her, barking at her, chasing her, and sometimes even being physically aggressive toward her. Bella obviously wanted our attention, and it made us really sad to see Koko being so rude to her. As a result sometimes we would separate the two and force them to take turns receiving our attention, since Koko was so adamant about not sharing. We were told that Bella gets frequent UTIs and that a possible cause was stress from Blu’s aggression toward her. It is possible the pet dynamic is different when their parents are home versus when we are there, however it was obvious that Koko is Bella’s main concern. Bella’s food is also served in the bedroom, which is the place Koko is the most defensive of. Bella would have to sneak under the bed and quickly jump onto the counter to avoid getting chased out by Koko. We personally would have preferred to feed Bella in another room, but we wanted to adhere to the pet's routine. When Bella is separated from Koko, her personality really shines. She is very affectionate and playful. She obviously enjoyed it when we gave her attention. She also slept in the bed with us sometimes and that was very cute.

We bring these issues up, not because we wish anything bad for Heidy and Stephen, but because we just want other prospective petsitters to know fully what they are getting into. For a lot of people, this sit could be perfect. It is in a lovely area, close to NYC, in a nice apartment with a fenced in yard. We just hope that our review encourages more openness in the future about all of the responsibilities, requirements, and pet personalities. A lot of the negatives we mentioned would not have been so bad if we had simply been informed of them ahead of our arrival. We feel some things were purposefully left out of the listing, welcome guide, and 2 pre-sit interviews. Blu and Bella are amazing cats, and Koko is a loving boy. He has the opportunity to be a very good dog, as he is very motivated, but it is quite evident that he needs more training to get there. We wish Stephen, Heidi, Koko, Blu, and Bella the best, but we would not come back to this sit.
