Sitting for playful, sweet, and gorgeous Penny and Pippy was a delight. Playing with their toys with them; watching them play, hunt, and explore outside; and cuddling with them while watching TV, reading, or working at my laptop brought laughter and warmth to each of my days. Some nights they snuggled up on the bed with me, while other nights they slept curled up on the kitchen chairs. They were without a doubt the most food-focused kitties I have ever met, so feeding them was a source of entertainment, too. They are clearly healthy and well-fed, but they (like my dogs at home, who do precisely the same thing) behaved as if each meal I fed them was their first in a year; it was hilarious. I think they may also be mind readers, because whenever I needed to focus on work, they would take long, luxurious naps; but whenever I was beginning to feel worn out by my telecommuting, one or both of them would come on over and jump up onto the table, settling in comfortably on the calendar beside my laptop or stretching out directly onto my keyboard, bringing me a much-needed dose of warmth and laughter. I am in love with them--and with Cece, their doggy sibling who stayed elsewhere this trip but whom I met before the sit began--and would gladly care for them again. Other highlights of my experience include communication with Jenny and Colin being smooth and easy from the very first moment. Jenny's responsiveness--even while on holiday--is lightning speed. She and Colin provided such clear and precise instructions for me via Zoom + in person + in their written instruction sheet that I felt completely prepared and relaxed when I began the sit, and had very few questions arise during my stay. Their home is a beautiful Alamo Square 1886 Victorian which, while retaining all of its original architectural distinction, has been thoughtfully and lovingly updated to include all mod cons. Their separate downstairs apartment couldn't be more comfortable, and it includes a little outdoor area where Penny and Pippy looooove to play, explore, and hunt. They also have a lovely little sidewalk garden, along with an abundance of potted plants, so this is a fabulous place to stay for folks who--like I--enjoy having plant life in and around their living space. Everything about this sit was wonderful. Thank you, Jenny and Colin, for trusting me with Penny, Pippy, your plants, and your home!

Maria João
This home is situated in the most beautiful spot on a hill, with stunning views and breathtaking sunsets. Maria and Joao are very nice and welcoming people, the area is interesting with culture-rich, truly Portuguese towns and villages, and I enjoyed my stay there very much. However, I am not giving it the maximum five stars and would like to explain why. It is mainly because what was – and at this time still is – described in the ad with regard to animals and responsibilities did not match the reality. The ad starts out with 10 adorable dogs and adorable they indeed are, but I got only four. While all previous sitters had 10 or 11 dogs to look after, for my sit several dogs were brought away and I was not told why. It was certainly well-meant, to reduce my workload, but having been a dog breeder myself previously I had looked forward to having a big pack once again, maybe even with pregnant bitches and puppies, and the number of dogs was one of the main reasons why I applied. Also the numbers and types of the other animals was not clarified until I arrived. There were 4 dogs, 8 cats, 1 donkey, 8 sheep, 2 pregnant miniature goats, 10 chicken, 3 guinea fowl, 1 duck and 2 geese. Which was fine with me, but I would have liked to know this before! With regard to the responsibilities, the ad and also the Welcome Guide forgot to mention that the dogs don’t only sleep in the garage but also use it as their toilet, and when let into the house they go there, too. The resulting scent is unpleasant when you arrive unprepared of this fact, but there are ways to make this manageable. Responsibilities also include taking the rubbish (including big bags filled with dog poo) in your car to the next village across a very bad unpaved road, making a log fire when you desire heating, and moving the poultry in and out of their pens – which proved to be difficult after the electric fence for the livestock enclosure stopped to work one week into my stay, so the livestock had to be kept in the paddock around the poultry pens and the whole herd always tried to storm into them when I opened the door. The electric fence is not fed by the solar panels but by a car battery and there was no replacement battery provided. Better preparation could have prevented this. “Off-grid” also means that, especially in winter, you may not have hot water or be able to use the washing machine for extended periods of time. It did not bother me, but I am mentioning it so future sitters don’t get the wrong impression, as a previous review wrongly says “is off-grid but has all the technology to function like any normal house”. The next grocery store is half an hour drive away, and this gives you a good reason to explore the neighbouring towns, which can be fun. In summary, it would be good if all these things were mentioned in the ad, so sitters are aware of them before they apply and commit, and I am writing this long review with the sole intention to fill these gaps. Once equipped with this knowledge and prepared for all the eventualities, you as a sitter have a better basis to decide whether this stay is right for you. The house is perfectly fit to accommodate even a family with children and I would recommend to Maria to offer it to families. The kids could learn a lot there about handling a large variety of animals, making log fires, saving energy and living sustainably in harmony with nature. I therefore do highly recommend this sit for the not-fainthearted, outdoor campers and nature lovers. Staying in this beautiful spot for a few weeks or a couple of months will make you wonderfully relaxed and give peace to your mind, and being greeted by so many happy, friendly animals every day will make you happy, too. For me, especially playing with the bottle-raised lamb Lucky was the most beautiful, unforgettable experience. Thank you, Maria and Joao.

This was a very pleasant place to stay in spite of cold weather. The dog and I enjoyed the gas fire! The town is small and friendly. I had a card at the library so enjoyed borrowing books. I took a bus a few times the short distance to York and once to visit the James Harriett museum. Very nice parkland for dog walking.

I had a lovely time looking after Brownie, Zoey, Grizzly and Bear. They each had their own distinct personalities, Brownie was very playful and loving and has such a sweet nature, she is like a shadow and follows you around and loves to play chase with her toys in the garden. Zoey was a little shy, but loved a play and an occasion a sit on your lap. Grizzly was the cheekiest kitty, who especially enjoyed knocking things off your bedside cabinet to get attention in the morning! He also loved playing and also followed me around and enjoyed sleeping on the bed with me, which was so lovely. Bear was a loveable sweet kitty, and I totally loved playing with him and giving him cuddles.
Kelley and Alex were a delight to meet, they were very welcoming and lovely to chat to, their home is beautiful and I enjoyed hanging out there and watching the amazing sunsets from their pool side.
I thoroughly recommend this sit.

Leslie and Steve were super welcoming, took me out for a nice dinner and insisted on paying taxi fees to/from the station. We had a wonderful time pet sitting at this lovely home! The pets here truly have a happy life. With no cars around, they can move freely and safely. The cats have the freedom to come and go as they please, and it's adorable to see even little Leia, the dog, using the cat flap! A special highlight for us were the three big pigs—they are absolutely delightful and charming.

The house itself is bright and airy, filled with natural light, and equipped with everything we needed. We even had the chance to taste the delightful eggs freshly collected from the chicken area. Evanne offered us to taste their delicious raspberries from the garden, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

The house is situated in the middle of fields, making it a perfect place to disconnect and feel the freedom of nature and silence! This is a pure country life and small farm experience! There are even very friendly and tame lambs that we could cuddle.

One morning, we realized the pigs had escaped from their pen. We contacted Evanne immediately, and she gave us tips on how to lure the pigs back. It was a pure adventure, but we managed to get them back safely! This was a good lesson for us on how to handle pigs. The friendly farmer from the neighborhood came to help us fix the fences. He joked that we would have to sleep with the pigs if we didn't fix the fences thoroughly. It was funny and very nice to meet him.

Our stay was way too short, and we would highly recommend this pet sit to any animal lover!
