I don’t really know where things went wrong so I’m going to just say that it wasn’t a good fit.
Most of Ashley’s reviews are 5 stars and most if not all mention she is a great communicator. This was not the case during my sit. In fact I was so uncomfortable that as soon as I landed I was reviewing options of flying back home. Why?

Ashely arrived 30 min before my scheduled departure for the airport. This made me rush through everything and I felt like I was just talking with little to no time for us to connect, get to know one another or her to interact with Yuki in front of me. After me rushing through the info the only question she asks: “Is he going to be fine if I go out on Friday?”.

Lesson learnt: add a requirement for a new sitter to arrive a minimum of 2 hours before my departure. This was the first time someone cut it so short so if you want to blame me for not being clear about this I will gladly accept it however most people coordinate with me and arrive even a day early and even stay a day late to ensure Yuki has care in case my flight gets delayed. Ashley texted to ask if she can park her car overnight but just notified me she left on the last day with some info about keys, laundry etc. without checking whether I was arriving on time.

We had theft in the neighborhood so all neighbors are super sensitive to packages left in front of our doors and text one another asking if they should pick it up so it’s not stolen. I mentioned to Ashley that I was expecting packages and to be on the lookout by front door but also warned her that some are delivered to garage so she wouldn’t be scared. I received a notification that 4 packages were delivered and were still in front of my door around 9:30 pm. At this point I texted her and asked to see if she can grab them. No response for 30 min so before everyone else went to sleep I texted my neighbor to grab them. No biggie. Ashley then texts me: “Because I haven’t responded in 30 minutes?” And she reacts with question mark to my message that said “I texted my neighbor and he grabbed them.Thx”.
This whole exchange made me feel so uncomfortable like I couldn’t ask her anything or else she would be offended or worse.

After this I still asked how Yuki was to which she responded and I ended with : Thank you, have a good night”. No response! Clearly she was upset that I asked my neighbors to help with packages and to me it seemed I now had to wait for responses for however long it took for her. Noted and so I did.

Lesson learnt: ask new sitter how good they are with response times. Pick those that have response times that meet your expectations.

I asked for everyday update and emphasized the first 3 days I’d be anxious to understand whether Yuki eats his medicine(life sustaining), eats food and any issues with his allergies.

Day 3 - zero updates.

Day 4 - I asked for daily update moving forward AGAIN.

I mean even if you have to copy the same text: “He ate food, ate medicine, popped and is super cute” and have sent it to me it would be awesome!

At this point I kept my messages to a minimum.

Lesson learnt: if you prefer not to be bothered,or don’t care for any friendly connection for future, Ashley might be great fit. For me this does not work. I need some warmth, some assurance and friendliness and there was bare minimum of that.

I have cameras at home which I fully disclose to everyone where they are and how they work. They are not in bedrooms or bathrooms and they are there for SECURITY reasons and only enabled during the night. I woke up several times to notifications that Yuki was moving around in the living room(2 am, 3 am). He never sleeps on the living room couch at night, he always sleeps and cuddles with sitters in their bed or his bed in their bedroom. I don’t know if she closed the door to her bedroom or what happened that he slept in the living room several times. Dont get me wrong, him sleeping in your bed is NOT a requirement but he should be in your bedroom. They are pack animals and I know how he is with adults. He loves people and bonds with sitters quickly. The fact he slept in living room just makes me believe they have not connected at all which is sad. This is subjective as I wasn’t there so I don’t know for sure, however if she was a better communicator one text or one message from her would imply otherwise. Sitters send me photos of them hugging Yuki and you can tell excitement and love pouring from their texts. This was really missing here.

I have repeat sitters from this platform, been here since 2018 and before someone suggests something like racial profiling: I travel with African American woman internationally frequently(Indonesia and Africa are the most recent trips), one of my best friends is Asian and I dated men of all skin colors.

To close this out, before I left for airport I smiled and told her that I really hope this will work out for the future given she has family here and I travel often. This was however a very stressful experience and because of that I recommend you chat with her via FaceTime first and figure out whether you are good fit for one another because the first email and intro was great, everything else left a lot room for improvement.

Silver lining : House was clean and neighbors randomly asked who was the woman taking care of Yuki as “she walked him a lot” 😉
