Amanda
We spent almost a month looking after Amanda’s animals and home.
Prior to the sit we communicated through messages and a video call. Amanda lived nearby so Tracey also went round and met her so they could run through everything in person.
We stayed in a lodge within the grounds of Miskin Manor. It was very peaceful and surrounded by fields. It didn’t feel isolated though as there were other lodges nearby plus the beautiful Manor itself was a very short walk away and was a great place to grab a coffee.
The sit advert stated that we could use the health suite during our stay. However during the meet up Amanda explained this was all closed down. We were disappointed as had been looking forward to this perk. It wasn’t a dealbreaker though but I do feel the listing should be edited to reflect that this is no longer something included for sitters.
The lodge itself had everything we could need. A very well equipped and comfortable open plan kitchen/lounge/diner, an upstairs bathroom, and a large and comfortable bedroom with en suite bathroom and plenty of space to hang and store our clothes and belongings.
We had hoped to be able to make the most of the outside space which was a decked area accessed from the kitchen. However sadly the decking was so slippery it wasn’t safe.
The only time we ventured out there was when the dogs accessed the space via a dog flap to go to the toilet and we needed to clean it up. It really was such a shame as a pressure wash would have made it a really nice and safe area to enjoy. Had there been one to hand we’d have happily given it a try!
Diesel and Daisy were adorable dogs and they won us over straight away!
They loved sleeping on their sofa but equally loved joining us on the other sofa for cuddles and fuss. The greeting you got every time you came through the front door was lovely, they really were so pleased to see us!
Sprinkles the cat was an absolute sweetheart. She took a little time to warm up as was initially very nervous. However once she gained her confidence there was no stopping her! She loved fuss, treats and headbutts!
Sprinkles and the dogs had to be kept separate which sadly meant we couldn’t spend as much time with her as we’d like as the dogs spent the days in the main living area.
Sprinkles would quite often stand the other side of the glass door looking in which would work Diesel up. The minute he saw her he would launch from the sofa straight at the glass door. How he didn’t go through it I do not know and it was a real concern for us.
We made sure to spend lots of time with Sprinkles and between Tracey and I she probably had 20 fussing sessions a day!
We took Diesel and Daisy out twice a day. Prior to the sit Amanda had told us she sometimes took the dogs to a park not too far away. She said she tended to keep Daisy on the lead but let Diesel off.
We were familiar with the park and knew it was heavily used by dog walkers.
On a few occasions at the beginning of the sit we had encountered other dogs. Diesel and Daisy and the dogs we met were all on leads but D&D had pulled and barked and were seemingly aggressive.
Due to this we felt it was sensible to do our best to avoid other dogs during the sit, the reaction to other dogs just didn’t sit quite right with us.
Luckily we were surrounded by fields and grassy areas within a very short walk of the lodge so we we able to alternate our routes to keep them interesting for the dogs.
We were very thankful to not meet any other dogs during our stay and Diesel and Daisy were a joy to walk. Diesel had an almost perfect recall and Daisy had none!!
She was adorably stubborn and wouldn’t be told which way to go if she was off the lead. She would simply plod along, plotting out her own path but this really was no bother as she never went too far, she really was comical to watch. Diesel would run ahead but would get so far and then turn around and run straight back to us.
Both dogs were fantastic when it came to bedtime and without fail as soon as you said bedtime they would happily trot downstairs to their cage and go straight in where they would sit patiently waiting for a treat, very cute!
They made no noise at all overnight either and slept soundly every single night without fail.
They were rather early risers but all they wanted was to be let out of their cage and have an hour or 2 sleeping on the bed with you (or in the bed in Diesels case!)
Overall the sit went really well although there was an unfortunate event around 2/3rds in. A friend visited us (Amanda gave permission) and Diesel bit her when she came in the room. He didn’t break the skin and whilst she was a little shaken we put it down to him being over excited as nothing like that had happened in the previous weeks.
On the last weekend we had a very unfortunate event.
We had taken the dogs for a long walk and Tracey was drying Diesel. Daisy came up beside him to have a drink of water and out of nowhere he completely turned on her. It was terrifying, he just kept attacking her, biting and pulling her and was making the most terrible noises, clearly he wanted to cause damage. We tried to separate them, to begin with without success. Daisy was also fighting back at this point and every time we tried to pull them apart they were snapping at our hands. Eventually we did manage to separate them and I carried Daisy to a different room.
She was bleeding quite badly from her mouth and her injury concerned us so we took her to the vets for a check.
She had been cut in 2 places but thankfully didn’t need any treatment.
Understandably we were both on edge for the remainder of the sit and we did all we could to remove any possible triggers to avoid further confrontations.
When Amanda returned home I told her what had happened. She told me it does happen sometimes and that she just pulls them apart and puts Diesel outside.
I was so shocked to learn that this was a normal occurance. It’s not something I have ever witnessed or been involved with and I hope never to again.
This absolutely should have been disclosed in the initial sit write up on Trusted Housesitters. I think it would be prudent to highlight any possible triggers of Diesels and also to advise potential sitters to keep them away from other dogs.
Reflecting on the sit it is frightening to think how many times we unknowingly put ourselves in potentially risky situations due to a lack of knowledge of Diesels behaviour.
I truly feel that any listing where there is any history whatsoever of dogs being reactive to each other, other dogs or other people should be highlighted. This gives potential sitters the chance to make an informed decision about whether they feel they would be suitable for the sit or not.
I do understand this could make a sit less desirable but it’s information that simply has to be shared.
Overall we had a really great time with Diesel, Daisy and Sprinkles and this is reflected in our star rating.

Paul
Paul was very kind and clear with what we had to do to take care of Kona, his house is located in a very quiet area and perfect for walking. Kona is too calm dog and a great companion for every day. We are very happy that she shares her life with Paul, they are a great team and a great family.

Kathleen
Kathleen and her husband were incredibly gracious with their house and we enjoyed dinner with them the night before our sit. Teddy and Charlie were wonderful companions and we enjoyed taking Teddy on walks through the countryside and the adorable surrounding village. Their house is lovely and we enjoyed our stay very much.

Hannah
I had a fantastic time watching Smudge! He is a sweetheart and warmed up to me quickly. I enjoyed spending time with him in the garden and playing with him.

Hannah and Charlie are very friendly and great communicators. They responded to messages quickly and provided a clear welcome guide. The location was perfect for me as it had tons of places to run/walk nearby, such as Regent's Canal and some parks. There are also grocery stores and nice pubs within walking distance.

I would love to come back and watch Smudge again!

Jo
I had a lovely couple of days looking after Zac at Jo's place in Margate. Her flat is very comfortable and colourful with a south-facing garden that Zac and I both enjoyed, particularly when the sun was out! Her flat is well positioned in Cliftonville, Margate, with all the shops and restaurants etc you'd need right on the doorstep. The sea is a 5 minute walk away too. I had a very peaceful and enjoyable couple of days and Zac is very easy to look after, affectionate and a complete sweetheart. Would happily stay again.
